I kind of like how NPCs had preferences in RPGs like Mass Effect or Dragon Age. I really enjoy the romances in those games actually. It feels a lot more personal, and often times even had an effect on the outcome of your ending in any particular playthrough. Having characters just like anyone really does romance a disservice in RPGs, in my opinion. For example, the Steve Cortez romance is generally considered pretty well done.
