Frustrating relative lack of LGBT NPCs in this game

I think Yoshi-P is very open to the needs of the FF community. Hopefully they will create some vibrant LGBT characters in the future that fit into the narrative and are not just shoe-horned in to tick some box. As a member of the LGBT community, nothing ticks me off more than seeing hollow, one dimensional characters running around in television shows announcing every five minutes that they are gay. People are more than just their sexuality/gender. If they add in a prominent LGBT character, I want them to do right by the character - give them all the depth of an Aymeric, Emet-Selch or even Minfilia. Let us fall in love with the character because of who they are. That's what I want.

Homosexual people have a right to ask for representation in games - as they are paying customers. However, as a straight man I can say I dislike being gaslit on the premise of denying someone's frame of reality. If I don't like apples I won't buy them. If you're selling or pitching an idea to me I have a right to decline it. In the same way some people have a right to deny LGBTQ+ despite their sexual orientation. I used to be defensive about them in the past but given today's trends that is over.

Anyhow, if you're interested in people joining your crusade to fight for the same rights perhaps it would be best not to be a bad representative. People feel pushed back for a reason.

FF14 is a wonderful game. It's beautiful, the gameplay is fluid, the lore rich, and the graphics stunning, especially in the Azim Steppe.

Part of the reason why it's so wonderful is because it is possible to fully immerse yourself in this game. Characters all have a backstory, many NPCs are fleshed out, have their own personality, and you really feel like Eorzea is a place you can live in.

However, the lack of representation of LGBT characters in this game is frustrating for a billion-dollar video gaming company. While I applaud SE for allowing the Eternal Bonding to take place between two people of the same gender, there is not much else in this game that represents LGBT characters, other than a token gay couple in Upper La Noscea.

Some people will also bring up characters like Alphinaud (weird) or Haurchefant, and say they're "WOL-sexual". But you know that they're not actually designed as gay characters. They just happened to be perceived as LGBT because of the fandom.

Many other RPGs are already fully embracing the need to represent minorities in their game, because minority representation is an important issue that affects the psychological development of minority youth.

I hope to see Square Enix do more to represent LGBT characters in their game, because by doing so they'll let LGBT youth feel like they have a place in Eorzea and feel welcomed.

I know some people will think I'm joking, but I'm not. As a LGBT PoC myself, I am deeply invested in this issue.

My unnecessary 2 cents:A Character in a story needs a purpose, a reason to be there. A good story uses many aspects to set the mood for the scene to convey what happens but also what emotion are in this moment are important ( chase scene - exciting or dramtic music). Now to the point a character insert just for the "LGBT+" would be a token and had no meaning and purpsoe besides "hey i am LGTB+" and lets be honest this dumb. Boring and dumb for all cases. It doesnt matter if we are talking about white male, black female, a mexican queer... its plain bad. Dont insert a character to fullfill youre weird "checkmark, we did have this in the game" fetish.

As someone who is LGBT, I personally don’t give a single shit not a SINGLE shit about the personal sexual orientation of video game characters or the absence of it. This isn’t Hollywood where it’s forced and misrepresented half the time. And even still it’s a high fantasy game! Might as well demand more ethnically diverse characters in a game where lalafells and Au’Ra exist. Pointless

There are many in the game, there is a knight in Whitebrim that invites another male knight to his bunk. There is a couple at lvl50 that says they escaped their homeland to come to Eorzea because any love is accepted in Eorzea. There are others that elude me at the moment. Many NPC's are WoL-centric If you play a Male or Female it doesn't matter both Aymeric and Haurchefant are into you. Many other NPC's are into the WoL too regardless of gender. Nael van Darnus takes on the identity and gender of their brother.

Sexual preference just simply IS NOT A THING in Eorzea, and if people paid attention to NPC's texts they would know that.
