"Unexpected error" crash, clueless as to what to do

As others have had this problem recently, so have I; FFXIV seems to be crashing out at random, sometimes after an hour ingame, sometimes immediately almost, giving me the following error message:

An unexpected error has occurred. Exiting FINAL FANTASY XIV.

I have tried running it in both directx modes, but it crashes in both. Not quite sure where to even start with this issue, never ran into it before, and nothing has changed in the past month regarding my installed software. The one thing I can think of is a Windows update, but I have done that to try and fix the crashes (unsuccessfully).

No, I haven't made any changes to the PC as of late. The crashes started happening about 3 days ago and have been inconsistently happening since. I am able to go to a location sometimes, other times it crashes out in the same place. I have been mostly in Lakeland during all of this, since I am logging in to do my dailies there.

Hey!
I am getting the exact same error message. Installing the game on your C drive may fix it (it did for me), if that is something you can afford to do. If you cannot do that, I asked in my ticket how Square Enix intends to properly fix it. Hopefully, they will come back with a reply to my thread (same section of the forum).

My drivers are all indeed up to date. It doesn't seem to change much whether or not other programs run alongside the game unfortunately, it crashes regardless.

As for the install location, my client already is installed on my C drive, so unfortunately I cannot try that specific tip.

We would like to recommend several other troubleshooting steps:

1) Make sure that your hardware is not overheating and remove any overclocks you may have on your graphics card or processor. Please check that any fans or vents are clear of blocks.
2) Disable any additional programs that could cause interference with the game itself including chat programs. Also, remove any custom configurations made using graphics driver-level programs
3) Remove any mods or injectors from the game or system
4) Turn off Fullscreen Optimizations. Find the executable file for the game (normally found in the install folder), right-click it and select 'Properties'. Under the 'Compatibility' tab, check the box labeled 'Disable Fullscreen Optimizations', then click 'Apply'.
5) Remove any unnecessary USB or audio devices (controllers, headphones, flash drives etc.)

I've tried all of the above steps by now, but it still crashes out completely randomly. I've even tried to do a reinstall of it and reset my user data (like saved interface stuff), but nothing seems to provide a proper fix. At seemingly random, it would still crash out with the same error message. Sometimes it takes about an hour, sometimes it's within ten minutes of me logging in.

I have no clue what the problem is, as there was no new program installed recently on my PC, everything is as it used to be a month prior, when I had no issues. The only changes made were OS updates and driver updates.

Step 1. Remove cheat engine.
Step 2. Uninstall daemon tools.
Step 3. Move your H games to another drive lol.

Also this could very well be gshade/textool issues. So make sure those are disabled too for problem solving.
