Summoner: An action or a dot?

I just want to get a feel about this, would people prefer if they revamped Summoner for 6.0 and remove egis and instead just let them summon the primal for one big attack or is having your summon pet at your side all the time make/break the job for you?

Realistically, they won't remove the egis. SMN will always have egis.
They're too represented in game to just suddenly be gone. (carbuncle gear, mounts, housing items, etc.)
They move product and earn the company money. (my fiance for example has 4 carbuncle lights, some plush, an earring, a piggy bank, and one of those resetable calendars)

I think the discussion should probably be: if we don't want the carbuncles out as a token summon between the big ones, what other form could / should they take?

The former while still keeping Carbuncle (all the varieties) as a summon option. Maybe retain the egi forms as a size option. (But I understand there are people who like FFXIV's summoner, so it's not something I think needs to change, just a preference.)

"Summon the thing for one big attack" was basically how FFXI's SMN used to work.

For a very long time, it was a rather weak and unpopular job. It took a loooooot of work on the devs' part to amend that -- Blood Pact: Rage/Ward split, Alexander + Perfect Defense and Astral Conduit being three of the biggest additions I can remember that helped put them back on the map in today's FFXI, so to speak, but there were numerous others.

I think this game's devs are somewhat wary of retracing anything that even remotely resembles those steps in FFXI, to be honest.

No. I dont want one hit summons. I want summons that feel alive , that they feel like wreaking havoc , a summon coming out needs to be game changer. In stormblood bahamut coming out meant business , you were the strongest dps in the game once he came out, something that shadowbringers bahamut isnt .
Pheonix is great but only cause of the trance effect , Which they really should give to the summons and instead rework how trance works, cause the way it works screws you over during downtime something that bahamut doesnt suffer from.
The egis dont look like much to most of you but they are completely busted , call them a dot but thats only cause they ruined them in shadowbringers . If there is any change needed on the egis is this , give them existence .
Titan should be able to tank for you
Ifrit and garuda should have a utility option like titan does
All 3 should do more than just auto without our command
If enkindle is different for each one of them so should their devotion
All 3 should be able to aggro and deal with stuff on their own
The egis are different from the Demis and thats fine , Demis arent excluded from problems so all this turn them into demis affair is just missing the problem that egis have.
Most people will be happy with one change on the egis and that change is to make them look like their bigger counterparts, Which if it makes it so people stop complaining ill gladly take the hit of being able to summon egis only in combat.

People insist on saying this job isnt a summoner , when in fact is the best summoner portrayal ive seen. all this job needs is some clear feedback instead of this mess of fanfictions and nostalgia

i feel the dots became such a minor part of summoner's identity. getting rid of them altogether and expanding on the pet actions is something I could enjoy

I'd rather summons have a variable opportunity cost than be obliged to have out something lackluster all the time. I don't mind Egis, but I mind that they're my only summoning option outside of Dragon-Eyes-a-la-Summoner and Version 2 thereof.

I feel like the egis and carbuncles are the most visible part of summoner's identity. Taking that away and just having big-hit-then-gone summons would just make them black mages with books. That said, the base egis could use some help to make them feel less like filler. (Obligatory comment about egi glamours.)

Or maybe the demis could be diversified. For example, instead of all them going through Bahamut and Phoenix, give base egi a different demi evolution. So Ifrit would go from Bahamut to Zurvan; Garuda could go to Phoenix and Sophia; and Titan could go to Alexander and Sephirot. Spitballing here, but just an idea.

I proposed a "summon gauge" where it can have 3 levels. If you summon at level 1 you summon a small egi to do a small attack, if you summon at level 2 you summon a demi like bahamut/phoenix, if you summon at level 3 you summon the real primal (a bit smaller than the original) to do a big attack. This would be great and very very very easy to balance.
