One of my retainers came back from a Quick Exploration with a HQ Sewing Needle. It's categorized as Miscellany and can not be Equipped. Searching the net gives no clue to it's uses. Anyone know what it's for?

Back in 3.2 it was added, in addition to other craft-able items by different crafting jobs, as an item a crafter can make to assist with Spirit Bonding their crafting gear.
Basically, a low level & cheap resource / high skill item that can be knocked out to by level appropriate crafters, so they can increase the Spirit Bond on the gear they are wearing while crafting.
In addition, it was also a way for crafters to practice or formulate rotations for L60 two star recipes without requiring rare or expensive materials.

"two star recipes from the fourth crafting master books (sweet gnome fish for culinarians, sewing thread for weavers, and griffin leather strap for leatherworkers) were added with this in mind. These items can be crafted with far fewer materials compared to other recipes."
Some of these items have sense been added to crafting recipes as materials or as turn in items for quests, but Sewing Needle (L60** Goldsmith) still appears to be a 3.2 grind-able crafting item to knock out while Spirit Bonding your gear around L60.
