And how many players do you know that are unable to play due to COVID?
That's the real key here. How many inactive players are currently affected by COVID versus how many have quit playing for other reasons, taking advantage of the COVID demolition suspension so they don't lose their house? How many of them would suddenly be able to play again if demolition was turned back on?
To be honest, they should fix the supply issue so demolition isn't even necessary.
As I've said before, most other MMOs don't have such a system so players lose their housing (only one I'm aware of is LotRO which has required monthly fee to maintain housing or lose it). It shouldn't be necessary here.

I know a few people who have had to take breaks due to covid because they lost their job. Some of them have their subs still rolling because friends are paying for it. Others managed to get back on their feet. Some who are medical staff continued to have the money for the sub but had little to no time to play at several points in the pandemic. One player I know lives with a sibling who has covid, and well we're of course hoping things don't get serious.
But the majority of people I know in this game are part of very tight knit groups so it wasn't surprising to see others step up to pay subs for someone. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have friends like this or have friends who are financially able to do this.
It's funny you say that because SE have turned off demolition for things that affected significantly less people. As far as I recall every time demolition has been paused before has been because of something that happened in Japan or the USA. An earthquake in Japan has no effect on players outside of that region, but demolition gets turned off on every server anyway. That's the real key here. Being a European player without a house at one of those points I wasn't exactly a fan of demolition being turned off even in the EU servers because of something that happened in a completely different part of the planet. It felt unfair. So I understand to a point how many in this thread feel.
But this time it's different. This time we're dealing with a global issue. It's not just one small part of the world being negatively affected.
As for how many are merely taking advantage of demolition being turned off no one knows what that number is. Not even SE do. To be able to know this number would require private information SE do not have the authority to access. All we have to go on is anecdotal evidence from the handful of players who come to this corner of the forums.
