"Limited" Races

I'm sure some of the people in the FFXIV community would like to play as one of the many NPC/enemy races in the game, myself included, but making new playable races from the ground up would be very costly and would require a lot of resources. But what if SE made items/actions that temporarily (or indefinitely?) turn you into another race, but they wouldn't be able to participate in some of the game's content, much like blue mages, or they'd be purely cosmetic and they wouldn't be able to fight at all? I think it'd be very cool to be able to just be an NPC/enemy race at least.

It already exists in shady websites and Discord servers... the question is if they are willing to endorse it.

I legit thought that was, what the thread was going to be about.

It would be kinda cool. I remember back in Everquest there were items you could get to cast an illusion of another race onto yourself. Was helpful to get into cities where you would otherwise be killed on sight by the guards.

So basically glamours which change your entire character model rather than just a single piece of equipment? That's been done in the all saints' wake event, and several bosses have abilities which transform players too. It's definitely possible. Those transformations tend to completely disable all abilities though, aside from the occasional special ability granted by the transformation, so you can basically only move around.

Recently bought FFChrystal Chronicles Remastered. The game had a "mimic" system that allows you to adopt the appearance of certain npcs to bypass the limited customization. You can take the appearance of said NPCs in dungeons but not in towns and certain cutscenes.

Could be yet another system to implement, like a "friend" glamour collection.

The Vath, Vanu Vanu, and Kojin have armor sets that make you look like them, so maybe SE can do something like that for most non-playable races. Bangaa and Nu Mou come to mind for me.

Only kinda. Real Vanu Vanu are more plump than a player wearing the armor; Vath armor doesn't give you their unusually shaped legs and feet; the shell on the Kojin armor is much smaller than the real one.

The Bangaa have a very large snout and also a somewhat humpback posture. Those probably would not translate well to an armor set. They walk on their toes and have bent knees, which likewise would not work with existing character animations.

Nu Mou have a very prominent tail which would be difficult to incorporate, and also similar posture problems as the Bangaa. An armor set based on them might look like a cosplay but would not pass for the real thing.
