They designed the macros to be bad to prevent partial automation of the gameplay.
You can circumvent some of the drawbacks like the missing of the queing of skills by repetition of the /ac command and targeting commands but it's mostly only useful for ground placing or to sidetarget partymembers, enough to make aether manipulation very useful, you only need one macro for every potential party member you can target for that.
