+1 to it not being set in stone, as there are DoH items that turn into giant versions which strap to your back, despite all of them being held as a 1-handed sword. I forget which but the one I'm thinking of is a giant frypan, whereas most frypans go on your hip.I don't think it's been coded so it's alterable, or they would have done it for some of the smaller MCH guns.
The only somewhat-variable approach is the one-handed and two-handed weapons for WHM and BLM, where wands are carried on the hip but staffs on the back - and they are quite simply a pain. Because they're categorised as different weapon types, they don't interfile in the armoury chest and you can't glamour one over the other.
Also I feel like carrying the larger axes on your hip would be just as bad for clipping, if not worse, because your arm would inevitably go through it.
There are some Carpenter saws that do it as well, I believe.
