If there was an expansion for FFXIV that had no power progression, either through level, skills, or gear, would you play it? Would you like it?
I guess it partially boils down to, what makes FFXIV fun for you? Just something to debate about!

first and foremost is story. but in an mmo there has to be some means of progression available usually. otherwise just go play an offline/single player jrpg.
story/prog/social is what i like.
I would play it because I'm already invested in this game, but I wouldn't be happy about it. I like progression. When there's nowhere to go, when there's no goals to set, I get bored. I suppose glam could keep me going, but there would need to be some seriously nice stuff if that was all an expansion had to offer.
Ya and they could focus on balancing/changing some jobs gameplay, add about 30 haircuts, add tons of character customization, several wards of housing, add lots of qol game experience, add several new open world events (like some epic battles against the empire) , and a long main story for example and even upgrade graphics/textures in general.
When I think about this aspect, I think about Guild Wars 1 and it's success, and how you had very little progression beyond Level 20.
Everything you gained at that point was their version of glamours, and obtaining new skills which offered different combinations, but never increases in power.
What makes a game like that work?
What is an RPG without some kind of progression? FFXI ToAU cap was still set at 75 yet they still had an end game where you purchasee new abilities.
Hmmmm... while I enjoy the story and I can't say that I wouldn't play it, I really would like some sort of progression. It wouldn't have to be traditional MMO levelling, per se, but I would want my character to feel like they grew from the start to the end of the expansion. It doesn't even have to be vertical progression but some sense of horizontal progression would probably be fine.
So, an expansion with only story and no form of character progression? Not really interested.
An expansion that focuses on story but still has at least horizontal character progression? Sure, that might be okay.
It does not have to be 10 levels or FF14 devs are going to have the same issue WoW devs have of being forced to do not only ilvl squishes but also level squishes.
Yes.
But I think they could only get away with that, ONCE.
If they have a whole expansion with no new levels, no added skills, and no new gear. Then to me, they better sure as heck have some good Story going on, and we still better get good fun content. But also hopefully they are still balancing the game in this mentioned "No Progression" Expansion. And I'd hope there is still things like new glamour.
Is there really a guenine progression in FFXIV ? Because I don't know about you but I sure don't really feel the progression from level 60 to 80. Sure you have more buttons to press but in the end you do the same thing. Furthermore, they prune skills every expansions in order to make sure the overall amount of buttons to press remain about the same. And as for the gear progression, most people without parser wouldn't really notice the impact of the gear on gameplay or effectiveness.
