For some yes, but what you are suggesting is beyond reasonable ambition.
Being the best is not ambitious it is something more than that.
This is why I asked if you are an ambitious person in real life, because I image there a lot of non successful people trying to compensate with computer games. (sorry if that comes across as rude, it just intrigues me I guess)
I think people are too worried trying not to get trapped in animation lock to even care about knocking Ifrits horns off.Look at incapacitations... How many people go into Ifrit and use them?

Atm the game is almost in dire need of some form of gear swapping. With each new update an old event is forgotten, and realistically can not keep up with itself. On top of that when new gear is added a large amount of it is either trash (not as good as what we already have) a macro piece (would be good if we could swap) or so good it makes everything else worthless. I terms of balance the middle option is by far the easiest since it can keep old and new going longer rather than needing a full new set of gear every update.
Nothing is going to stop the hardcore from playing like they're better, because if you invest enough time in something you're always going to be better then someone else. Casuals can not keep up with the hardcore base and that's about it. In any MMO goals need to take a good amount of time to complete or it can not maintain subs since people will get bored after they finished all their goals. I myself would much rather have gear swaps and a broader amount of goals then only playing til I obtain this months gear and calling it a day.

I'm not supposed to make friends in this game? Oh my... I feel kinda sad for you. Why would you not want to interact with the people that you're playing with? Why limit making friends to only Facebook and dating sites? If you wanna be an anti-social player who doesn't want to make friends while playing, then that's your thing... I guess. But don't tell Alexis to go somewhere else if she wants to make friends in this game. I don't see anything wrong with people doing that.
ANYWAY, back on topic...
The only problem that I foresee with gear swapping is that it's just ANOTHER THING people will have to conform to in order to play certain event/raid/etc., and elitists would force others to think and play like them or tell those players to gtfo. I saw it happen in FFXI, so don't tell me that this wouldn't happen here.
Also, SE game designers designed FFXIV content without the need for swapping gear. They already said that they will not promote gear-swapping. So, instead of worrying about what gear to swap in, how about we just complete the content the way it was meant to be played? Plan ahead, enter battle with the gear you need, and win the fight. Really, it's that simple. You wanna be awesome by using your character's job's full potential? Well, show people YOUR full potential by planning ahead and creating a strategy with the people you're playing with.
It's already annoying enough that people demand that I have certain abilities learned before playing with them. I don't need people telling me that I need to swap in gear during the middle of the battle while already trying to keep up with the fast pace of things.
By who's standards? Who are you to judge what is reasonable or not? Is there a law saying that I can't be excessively ambitious to the point of obsession? I'm not hurting anyone or infringing upon anyone else's rights as a human being by being like that. And FYI, this IS real life. Some people choose to try and be the best doctor/lawyer/basketball player/race car driver... I try to be the best in anything I love to do. And one of the things i love to do is play games.
First of all you will NEVER avoid situations whereI'm not supposed to make friends in this game? Oh my... I feel kinda sad for you. Why would you not want to interact with the people that you're playing with? Why limit making friends to only Facebook and dating sites? If you wanna be an anti-social player who doesn't want to make friends while playing, then that's your thing... I guess. Second, you probably already know who those people are. You are either like them or your not. If you are, what's the problem? If you aren't you probably don't do anything with them anyway. So what's the problem???
Yea other MMO's manage with this style of content so why can't FFXIV, obvious I think what you are hinting at is that you want FFXIV to have content that lasts years like FF11 did, well that not going to happen... ya know why ?
Well firstly we are at lvl 50 and that is not the finally cap.
Secondly the current dev team look like they are reaching for a model of content that is continuously being replaced, expanded and superseded.
Thirdly FFXI was stuck at lvl 75 for 6-7 years which allowed the content to revolve around horizontal progress.
The third point is a pretty interesting one, because its the main reason why many people left FF11 because SE made the mistake of undermining everyones progression in one patch, they won't make this mistake again, so its unlikely we will see a situation were we are stuck at a level cap for 7 years again.
You have a point..By who's standards? Who are you to judge what is reasonable or not? Is there a law saying that I can't be excessively ambitious to the point of obsession? I think the standard is based on what the majority see as suitable behaviour.
Sure maybe nobody is willing to say its unreasonable etc, but we will think it anyway (which is why we use words like Elitist), I'm not saying I oppose such behaviour just saying I find it interesting.

So a system that can make you so overpower you can solo HNM... we want this why? I thought this was an MMo and HNM were a team activity. Thank you for posting information that asserts that gear swapping could break the system.

The fact that all Primal fights are weapon rewards and the fact that Darkhold is so dead it may as well not exist already proves that undermining progress is exactly what the current build of the game does. The third point is a pretty interesting one, because it the main reason why many people left FF11 because SE made the mistake of undermining everyones progression in one patch, they won't make this mistake again, so its unlikely we will see a situation were we are stuck at a level cap for 7 years again.
