I just want to be sure I'm getting this -- I need to go through the raid in the middle of the Crystal Tower quest lines in order to proceed with the 5.3 MSQ content?
If this is true, I guess 5.2 is as far as I will ever go in FFXIV.

Yes, to my understanding you have to complete the Crystal Tower Storyline. I'm surprised they didn't make it a requirement to 5.0 (I think it is much more enjoyable with CT completed).
It's super simple to do it now, you shouldn't have any trouble doing it.

In order to start 2.x quests new players must complete this content.
What happens if they dont have a schedule that allows them to play during peak hours? What happens if they sit in 1, 2, 3 hour queue's and still cant enter.
Its a 24 man raid, not something you can easily solo, or undersize or even enter if you arent playing during busy hours.
They literally can never continue the main story. This was a very bad choice in my opinion.

The Crystal Tower raids pop fairly regularly even outside peak hours. Granted, if you only play during early morning or so it can be hard to find people for them - but that would be the case for every other dungeon and raid in the game as well.In order to start 2.x quests new players must complete this content.

But if your playing hours are always like that, you should transfer to a server better matching your time. With servers in Japan, North America, and Europe, you can always find some server that is pretty busy at any given hour.
While you can't solo all the raids, you certainly can do most of them undersized. Find three level 80 friends, and they should have little trouble carrying you through all the Crystal Tower raids.

There's no reason to quit over it. Crystal Tower is face roll at this point.
Don't get scared by the word "Raid" in alliance raid. It's basically just a slightly harder (when current) dungeon with a lot of people. It's really nothing to be worried about, and it'll likely go pretty fast.

If you are coming from other MMOs, please be aware that the term "raid" in FF14 bears little resemblance to what you may be familiar with
Do it, get some glam or poetics etc whatever you need and you never need to enter it ever again.... unless you pick Alliance Roulette then it's like almost always guaranteed but that's for a different thread.

I don't want to sound rude or mean to you, but the Crystal Tower raids are an extreme faceroll now with everyone's gear. Think of it like a dungeon, only now you have 23 other people doing it with you instead of 3 others. Like Stepjam said the word "raid" is a bit of a misnomer here.

Faceroll or not, how is it any more daunting than all the other dungeons and trials required to progress the story?
Mate if you find the story-required content to be daunting, you may want to try an easier game. Maybe something with a "just give me the story" difficulty option.
I'm certainly no elitist, and I don't even bother with stuff like Savage because it doesn't interest me, but even I can see that dungeons, normal trials, and non-Savage/Ultimate raids are generally pretty easy. Once you step into the optional stuff (i.e. not required for the story), sometimes things can have a bit of a jump in difficulty (in the sense that you have to do more than stand there and spam attacks), but they're by no means 'daunting'. Unless you have a literal disability that makes things harder for you by default.
EDIT: Misunderstood, I'm dyslexic. Sometimes words don't go in the right way. My original point still stands, regardless of who it's directed at.
