    Help with Tab targeting

I\\'m honestly used to this working in other MMO\\'s but with Ff14 it seems very random.

What I expect is for the tab to cycle through hostiles (attacking or aggro\\'d ontome or party member) that are nearest to me and in front of me and then moving away nearest-to-farthest. And by "in front" I expect that to be a cone or 120 degree arc in front, ignoring anything to my far left and right.

What it seems to do instead is jump all over the screen. I can have 2 creatures actively attacking me in melee and hitting tab will ignore the other attacker go onto a currently non-hostile, way the hell from me.

I would be ok with mouse targeting except in group content, like dungeons, where i want to target a baddie with the most health in the middle of a group and trying to clicking on that is just as likely for me to click a party member or the seeing baddie.

I\\'ve tried changing the target filtering options but no matter what I seem to select it just doesn\\'t allow me to cycle through enemies, in front of me, who are attacking party members or myself or charging into attack a party member.

    Any help would be appreciated.

One of the more major flaws of the game. Tab targeting seems to largely work on a left-to-right basis, with no regard to proximity. Starts off with whatever is closest to the left side of the screen, as long as it's in targeting range. So, naturally, if you happen to shift your camera at all while attempting to tab target, you could also be shuffling the target order if their position on screen changes.

There's a setting to change tab targeting styles, but I never really noticed an improved difference.

Personally, I tend to use a different key for "target nearest enemy" that usually works out better. Occasionally I may want a different enemy, and I can at least tab from there without it starting way off on the left (because I had targeted something more central, so it just continues to the right from there).

And target filtering, yeah, bit misleading. Not certain, but I think it might be a more controller-specific setting. At least, never known how to get it to behave differently for keyboard.

Well at least I understand it better even if I still don't like it. I'll keybind that target nearest enemy

Is there a way to either hide the party health bars that float above each character or to make them "pass through" (mouse click ignore them and click on whatever is behind the party health bar)?

At least with that l would more likely click on an enemy in the middle of a large pack instead of repeatedly clicking the tank or mdps.

    Thanks

There's 4 different "tab" styles in the game.
My suggestion is to mix up 2 of the 4.

There is a basic "target nearest thing im facing" but it does NOT actually tab through the targets. Pressing again is the confirm button to attack.
Press this to target the nearest mob. Then press the left, or the right, tab target buttons, to tab to the next mob to the left/right of ur current target.
If you dont target ur 1st mob before left/right, u end up targeting mobs on the far left/right of ur screen instead.

This is roughly based on how FFXI did it, but with more button presses, and less effective. In FFXI the left/right ONLY target mobs left/right of u, and starts in the front of u, with the nearest mob. Here left/right dont do that, and instead u have to press the confirm button to start it off, adding 1 extra button to press.

So it was better in XI where it was possible to select the correct target with a single push, even if there were 50 mobs. here its roughly 2 presses, and even then, sometimes it can be janky 1 in 10 times, selecting a mob slightly more left/right of the target thats actually just left/right of the current target.

there is an option for a "cone" system, almost similar to what ur talking about, but its based on camera, not ur character. and the default option has the cone option turned off.
i dont suggest either of these, as they are completely random, and theres no real predictable way to select the correct target in 2 or less button presses, w/o complete luck. (Personally hated WoW and its clones for this purpose, nearly 33-50% of the time 2 presses wasnt enough to target a mob thats the 3rd furthest way. and it would require 3-5 presses, and felt kinda random, were as it felt better to always select the correct target in a single button press in XI (2 in XIV))

If you only want to cycle through enemies that you've engaged, change your "While weapon is drawn" targeting filters to only "aggroing enemies".

    /characterconfig
    Control Settings
    Filters
Enable target cycling: While weapon is drawn.

These filters affect the movement of the cursor using the "Move Cursor/Target Cursor Left" and "Move Cursor/Target Cursor Right" keys (/keybind, System), not the tab targeting, so that you will target only aggroing enemies when your weapon is drawn. You may set one of these to Tab if you wish; just be aware of your filter settings and make sure you can target whatever you intend to target in both stances.

This is a soft target by default and requires pressing the Confirm keybind to convert to a hard target. If you want to make it a hard target always, /characterconfig, Control Settings, Target, Switch target circle to target select.
