No other expac had pulled that crap, and I'm faced with the prospect of never getting an augged GNB jacket because I struggle with Memoria Misera.
There has to be a better way.

There is a possibility somewhere along the Relic's quest we might be able to augment the antiquated gear. (IE Eureka style)
What I don't get is why not just let us dye artifact gear from the beginning.
Whether it's the relic quest or something else, it definitely seems like we should get a simpler upgrade at some point since the base version is "weathered" (somehow despite being newly made for us) and the trial version is "idealised" with the five materia slots, so we may at some point get a plain upgraded version with two slots and no special name.
We still need a dyeable version of the non-relic weapons, too.
Well, the Heavensward gear being dyable was locked to Savage at the start. Its not the first time they've done it.
In another year you'll be lvl 90 and can unsync it.
Or outgear it in another patch.

It definitely wasn't ideal, but the trial isn't too bad once you know what's what. Like usual though it isn't really yourself you have to worry about, it's the other 7 people who may or may not be on the same page. Personally, I HATED that fight as GNB, so I ended up going as a dps for farming. Either way, got my GNB set, my BRD set and half of my SAM set (had a specific look in mind so that was all I needed). Good enough for me.

I know this isnt valid but SB had it locked behind the first stage of Eureka i find that worse than a EX trial
A lot of it is better than the crafted gear depending on the piece and stats, and each piece has 5 materia slots as opposed to 2 on the crafted stuff. The item level is the same, but the potential stat boosts are pretty decent. They are probably good starter sets for a fresh 80.
The Idealized sets are Item Level 480, same as the Neo-Ishgardian sets. The difference is that they may have different substats, and the Idealized sets have 5 Materia slots instead of 2.
... oh, and you can now trade Neo-Ishgardian gear in to buy Item Level 490 variants of the same gear, which does let them edge out Idealized gear due to main stat supremacy.
You can either see this as a challenge and an opportunity for self-improvement, and push yourself out of your comfort zone to obtain something you really want, or you can wait until the next major patch/expansion when the fight will be very easily outclassed and trivially farmed. That's by design with many things in this game, and other mmos for that matter.
Good luck in either case!
