what I do is keep it simple, then I translate it to english to make sure it translates as intended; if not, I rephrase it.

Google translate from English to Japanese can be pretty bad, but it's usually somewhat understandable. Everyone will know you're using a translator... but that's okay. At least you're trying to make the effort of putting it into a form that is semi-understandable. ^^;

I usually only type single words into google translate and pray the output is that one word. lol Then I try to pair it up with some auto-translate to hopefully see if it makes sense.
The game has little useful phrases in auto-translate... I hope they redo the entire auto-translate.
BTW, the correct word is "romaji" or "rômaji" depending on chosen transliteration method. "Romanji" is just wrong.
Typing Romaji will be understandable because there is no way tons of wild animals would bust down the walls and trample through the house. And even so I think they would understand it was mearly a mistake and you had no idea sending Romanji would cause such a catastrophe.
I had this fear once before as well. Don't worry though as it was only a book/movie and no harm can come from it! ^.^v
