Can a Black Mage/Thaumaturge become a machinest or dancer without being an archer?

Second time through FF14 and I'm actively playing a level 20-ish thaumaturge (this is an old character I've decided to bench but I can't post yet on my thaumaturge) .

If I level up as a Black mage and unlock the machinest and dancer jobs, can I start either of those jobs right away or do I first have to level up the archer job?

    Thanks,
    Tinker

PS I am not leveling up my original character because I just wanted to start over completely fresh (new job, new race, yada yada)

What has made you think Dancer and Machinist branch off of the Archer job?

The good news is that you're incorrect. Only one base class splits into two: Arcanist becomes Summoner and Scholar. And none of the DLC added classes (Dancer, Gunbreaker, (edit to add: Samurai, Red Mage), Dark Knight, Astrologian) have a base class. You will start Astrologian and Dark Knight at level 30 by default, (edit to add: Samurai and Red Mage at leveel 50), and Dancer and Gunbreaker at level 60.

Why not just start a new job as that thaumaturge? you can have every class on one character. And just buy a fantasia when you have $10, and boom you've got new race, new class, same story progression.

Though, of course, do what you want. I remade characters a few times too until I got tired of doing the early story, haha.

Nah jobs don't need multiclassing to unlock anymore..

You do have to do Archer if you wanna be a bard but Machinest an Dancer are stand alone jobs.. reach Heavensward for MCH an DNC requires lv60 or 70 class to unlock

In ARR and HW, cross-class was a Thing. To become BLM you had to have ARC at level 15. DRG? Level 15 MRD. WHM? Level 15 THM (I think--or maybe that was just to unlock Swiftcast). That was all dissolved in Stormblood but if it's been a while since the OP has played then I totally understand the mindset.

I can only think of 4 reasons you would potentially need to unlock archer. One, of course, would be if you decided you wanted to play bard too. Two along the same lines, you decide to level ALL classes to max for an achievement/mount. Three would be unlocking bard so you can unlock the ability to play an instrument in game and make music. And then lastly, and the only one that would be remotely advantageous to you, would be playing bard before machinist so you would already have a set of good gear. Dancer comes with a set of gear, so that one wouldnt matter. So if none of those 4 scenarios sound like you, then just do what you plan to. Study the dark arts until a dance performance moves you to change your combat style.

Machinist, dancer and all other Extra Jobs don't have any prerequisite classes.

You only need to have ANY class/job at required Level to unlock it (for example Lv30 for MCH, Lv60 for Dancer) then you can forgot about your old job and play you new extra job.

You can play THM til Lv30, unlock MCH and play MCH to Lv60 then unlock DNC.

That was just for cross-class skills. You had to get THM to level 26 for something (either surecast or swiftcast), it was such a pain as someone who didn't want to play BLM at the time.

You did have to level two classes to unlock jobs though. Paladin for instance required gladiator (natch) and conjurer I wanna say

This is situationally true, but MCH requires that someone has leveled a Disiple of War or Magic to 50 and advanced the MSQ to HW to gain access to Ishgard. For someone leveling a job for the first time, it would be

    THM from 1 to 30
    BLM 30 to 50
MCH back down to 30 and then up to 60
    DNC from 60
