Rival Wings: The Quickening (5.3 Speculation)

    Notes: https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodes...3b3da623e3670d

    tl;dr:
    • Shorter max match length; gobcrates spawn sooner to match
    • Cruise Chaser and Brute Justice damage buffs
    • Push objective buffs (sturdier gobtanks; gobtanks and mercs increased damage against mammets)
Thoughts on it: Seems they are trying to increase the pace of Rival Wings by lowering the time matches can go for and making push objectives stronger. They also greatly increased the efficacy of mechs VS players, which makes sense since ranged and healers have a bigger HP pool this expansion.

It is notable that Oppressor was left out of the changes. For the most part they will still be the same (they will die to other mechs faster), but it increases the importance in map objectives which is nice since gobtanks could use some love. BJs have a whopping 50% DPS increase against structures though so I think matches will pick up pretty fast after a tower falls granted your pilot is competent.

Anyways, what do you folks think of the changes so far?

This is decent. Mechs needed the damage buffs. Mercenaries and Gobtanks being more of a threat due to time changes seems fair enough. I'm kinda a bit confused with range being able to instantly die from a mega beam once again and important abilities shaving off half of their life bars, but I'm pretty sure that it can be worked around regardless.

However, with what I have been seeing in some of the other threads I don't think this change will have Rival Wings up and running on its own just yet. It's pretty clear how much value is put on the roulettes. I wish it wasn't like that, but there's not much that can be done with collective thoughts.

I do think more attention has to be given to getting people to try the dang thing, yeah. The on-boarding processing for PvP is bad enough, but RW is even worse because honestly there's an absurd amount of things to learn about a single map, more than any of the other PvP modes, where PvP in of itself already has a lot to learn. There's been some sentiment here that people who like PvP will PvP, but even for myself who enjoys PvP, it took my ages to even give RW a shot. I think about the resistance it takes to get a first or second game out of someone who is less familiar with the battle systems.

I don't play ranged in RW myself but I have concerns with it, just due to the nature where the AOEs from mechs don't have any kind of compensation for the recipient of the attack, making it so people get hit way after they vacated the area. I am not opposed to instant kill stuff (enough ways you can get more or less instantly gibbed in general), though it feels like a bit of a bold design choice given the tick rates and all that kind of stuff for FFXIV.

I don't mind the changes but if they want to lower queue times further then they need to do more to get people interested. I can't tell you how many endgame users I've met that know little to nothing about PvP or what it has to offer. They either unlock the area, go no further and forget about it or never touch it and forget about it. Then there I am getting people interested by showing them what's in it and how fun it can actually be.

There just isn't enough active coverage on it, the game simply doesn't do a well enough job keeping PvP in the public eye. Heck every other day I've got people asking me where I got my Late Allagan Gear.

I mean it's not rocket science, even a simple PvP representive in each city advertising some of the gear/mounts with a few mannequins and static displays would help.

Yeah they probably need to add an incentive or two for Rival Wings.

It will no longer drop Moogle Tomestones. Also I think a lot of people got both their Avenger mounts. That leaves the titles, Wings of Steel and Wings of Fire.

There was nobody playing Rival Wings on Aether last night even though it was the last chance night before the patch.
