There is only a tonality shift if you choose to read it that way...

But back to the crux of my position, prior to "fade to white" the three cities quests are completely different. In my opinion much to their indavidual detriment they all end on major cliffhangers and shunt you rather haphazardly into a unified storyline, that also ends abruptly.

The GC's also have considerable differences in quests, both offered by the headquarters and by NPC's in town that are only available once you pledge to that particular company.

I like to see everything that an MMORPG has to offer. In most of FFXIV's competitors this can be done on one character. At current, FFXIV requires either multiple rerolls of one character, or multiple characters.

Because of this, I dislike the "pay to have more characters" that both XI and XIV employ, and on that we will have to agree to disagree.

But to get back to the original topic...

OP, no. It is highly unlikely that you will ever be able to log in to one account simultaneously in multiple places, there are a host of reasons: technical, and in my opinion nor importantly, security wise that this will most likely never be a possibility.
Typically, most places see a simultaneous log in to accounts as evidence of a possible stolen account. I once had my WoW account locked because I logged on when my brother was using my account and blizzard decided my account must have been hacked.
