Yeah, let's just forget the fact that FFXIV and FFXI are about the only MMORPGs where you can (and actually should) do everything on one character and the only MMORPGs where you're actually playing a character rather than a mere job archetype.

Regardless of weather you agree or disagree about the whole character thing, there is no reason it should cost a lot. 3$ is expensive, and most people, from .. EVERY OTHER MMO who is USED to having multiple slots will instantly see it as 3$ x 8 (or w/e common value they are into). I see it in comments all the time whenever XIV has an article "lol this game is so expensive!" Its just way to complicated for the player, they should make slots free, no reason to be greedy.
That said, you can actually login to your account from multiple locations, you just cannot get onto a character(s) from different locations once one has been logged in. You just go to the character selection screen and trying to select any characters results in an error. It was possible in Alpha to actually do this but was restricted later. It is quite common to restrict so I dont see it being changed. RMT issues or account sharing etc. 8 friends could just use 1 account at 13/month or w/e, rather than 8 friends having seperate accounts and SE making 8x13/month, so from a business perspective, no it will never happen.
It's not complicated. You can play the whole of the classes/jobs with just one character. Thus, you get the whole game with one slot for which you really don't have to work extra for gear (even sending things via mail would be a pain). That's one of the things I hate most from other MMOs, the whole stupid "one role per char" thing.Regardless of weather you agree or disagree about the whole character thing, there is no reason it should cost a lot. 3$ is expensive, and most people, from .. It's perfect as it is.

That right there is why it is complicated, because that is alien to some people, there is an insanely low amount of games which allow you to do this, its not "normal" so people dont know if it. Sure you can tell them, but it doesnt tell you anywhere on the SE account that you only need 1 slot. It's not complicated. You can play the whole of the classes/jobs with just one character. Should people have to do a bunch of research and start asking around before knowing? No, they should be able to activate an account and jump in, SE have made this the most difficult way possible.
It would be much better if you had 1 fee and x number of slots on that fee, like pretty much every other well known MMO. It is a model which people are used to and are happy with.
Actually, I wouldn't play an MMO that limits my character to one class. Tried it twice and hated it. This is one of the big deals about XIV and is advertised on every piece of SE media regarding the game that you come across with the exception being the CE.That right there is why it is complicated, because that is alien to some people, there is an insanely low amount of games which allow you to do this, its not "normal" so people dont know if it. Also, this is modern gaming - a majority of people research before they buy. It's not like 1992 and 1986 (SNES/Genesis and NES/SMS) when boxart and Nintendo Power/Gamepro "sold" the game. People know what they're getting into nowadays...which is why the subscription base isn't growing. If you didn't know about the concept of what the armory system is (emphasis on the word "concept") then you are in the minority.

Why are you bringing this up? No one is saying that, have I? No. Has absolutely nothing to do with the arguement, the argument is the fact that you have to PAY for multiple characters, doesn't matter about the game mechanics, the general consumer see's "$3 per character" and nothing else.
You can explain to them why they dont need more, they dont care, it looks greedy and is not helping SE at all. It is of course part of the big "lol@SE's Failure" that is common.
Also just to backup Pandastirfry's statement, you'd need 3 characters to also experience all Grand Company stories. Not just the starting main scenario.

Thank you for saying this.Regardless of weather you agree or disagree about the whole character thing, there is no reason it should cost a lot. 3$ is expensive, and most people, from .. No one needs to be judging the way others want to play. That has nothing to do with anything.
I like to play more than one race. It doesn't matter if someone else doesn't see the use in that. It makes the game fun for me. Besides that I feel I never run out of things to do having more than one character. And I get to level a job I enjoyed all over again. See quests a second time. Experience different cities story-lines, etc.
But I shouldn't even need to explain myself.. it's beside the point. We all play differently. If someone only wants to play only one character that's none of my business. Have fun with that.
The fact is extra characters in this game cost much more than most pay-to-play MMOs. It may drive away players like myself who get really bored just seeing the same old character on their screen all day.

It would be a nice bonus for us who are playing currently to get a free character slot in 2.0...

You can NOT play the whole of the game with just one character.
To play the WHOLE of the game you need at least three.
I like the story in this game but as a citizen of Ul'dah and member of the maelstrom I had no idea what the other cities and grand companies stories were like, so I made 2 more character because we are locked into those choices. Maybe in 2.0 that will change, but what good does that do me now seeing as the story is going to be drastically different in 2.0.
Also, some times I get bored of being a Miqo'te and want to see something from the perspective of a lalafell.
And when I'm out of anima and leve allowance but still want to play and feel like I'm accomplishing something it is nice to have an alt to play with...
There are plenty of reasons to have multiple characters in this game just like in XI and the additional cost per slot does not feel to me adequately justified by "I can be multiple class" when at the same time I am locked into key aspects of the game in the same fashion that other games lock you into one class but you can still experience all of the content.
While I do not discount personal reasons for wanting to play with multiple (appearance, general enjoyment, etc.) characters I have to disagree with the statement that you are locked into content to an extent that would warrant an alternative. The main storyline connects in the 20's and the plot is the same once it connects in Uldah. If anything, this is a 2-3hr endeavor that someone can do.You can NOT play the whole of the game with just one character.

Again, I am not devalueing the storyline aspect but making statements like the above are not accurate, in my opinion.
