That could tie into Yoshida's "subverting our expectations" about going to Garlemald, perhaps we don't fight them at all, perhaps by the time we get there Garlemald proper has already given up and is going into reform and we're instead either only dealing with Zenos or one Legion that won't give it up, as opposed to all out war against Garlemald.
With 6.x supposed to be ending all of session one, they may want to knock something big out quickly given how much they've got to get through, though still give us some kind of fight with the Garlemald, after all, the sorrow of werlyt and Bozja are reminding us how dangerous a single Legion can be.

If anything, I think Garlemald (or at least a faction in it) will ask us if we could help them clean up the current mess Garlemald is in. The Emperor is dead. Last we saw, the Ist and IIIrd Legions were fighting each other over control of the Garlean Capitol. The VIIth Legion has it's Gundam scheme and a... crazy Legatus. More and more conquered territories are rising up against Garlemald. And the entire contenent is more than likely out for Garlemald's blood in some size shape or form in retrebution for said conquering. Oh, and Zenos controls the palace, but isn't interested in ruling.

At the very least, someone has to go and get Zenos out of Garlemald before anything can really start getting done to stabilize it, since... Zenos is just going to cut down anyone who tries to dislodge him. Except maybe the WoL who has proved they can fight on his level. Thing is... the Eorzea Alliance has a lot better things to do than to march a continent and a half over to keep Garlemald from imploding anymore than it already has under Emet-Selch. But Zenos really does have to go...

I'm still considering "secretly not dead" a possibility until further notice.

He's just... gone nowhere at the end of a rather disjointed-feeling character arc and it seems like a waste at this point.

I mean its possible he has a clone body, since the stolen Allagan technology has proven that can be done. But I'm not sure this is a path they are pursuing atm.

Zenos is the rightful heir to the throne and considering that seemingly nobody is aware he's the one who killed the Emperor aside from Estinien and Gaius (Which I still find awkward considering that we've seen that the Garlean castrums have surveillance cameras), I'd assume there's a significant portion of the populace that would be willing to rally behind his leadership; even though he in all likelyhood intends to just escalate things into an all-out war with everyone who opposes Garlemald in order to force our hand.

Considering that the Eorzean Alliance was evidently competent enough to push back and pressure the combined forces of Garlemald into deploying the Black Rose during the bad timeline, I feel like something is going to have to change in how the Garleans are fighting to make them enough of a threat to warrant more attention they've been getting. Underhanded tactics like surgical strikes on populated areas and/or some kind of superweapon they've been keeping under wraps, perhaps?

Assuming he's actually dead and not just in hiding after Zenos tried to kill him, I don't think I'd mind if they decided Varis has the Echo as a means of bringing him back. Though I can't help but imagine they'd stick him in one of those Solus clones he apparently had stashed away.

It would be really unsettling to have Varis in Emet's body... and more than a touch ironic, given their exchange in Tales from the Shadows.

I'd rather him turn up as himself, whether cloned or just not quite dead yet when Gaius and Estinien made their exit.

(Confirming character deaths is so much harder when the game actively shows characters on-screen without the massive injuries that they are intended to have - Zenos after his death for instance - and not even keeping to artistic "not showing this so you can imagine the gore off-screen" shots.)

Uhm, i think you forget the scene with him sitting in the Throne Room with Garlean corpses everywhere, i think it came to peoples attention already in the time we were in the shard that he did kill his father by now and people tried to stop him as seen with the corpses, on top i believe we will see the two sister guardians we fought in Ghymlit again as witnesses also for it. I don't think here he can even force anyone in a war anymore and just does what he likes, he not cares for the land or country, just his hunt.

Theoretically, the Garleans could just let Zenos have the palace. He's not giving any orders, so they could ignore him. I mean, if he gets it in his head that he wants to stab the local townsfolk, they also couldn't *stop* him. But still.

The Garlemald cloning facility definitely feels like it's going to come up in a major way somewhere down the road, Varis or not. Otherwise saying that Emet had a whole bunch of spare bodies instead of just the one spare wouldn't have really had a point, I feel.
