I think what folks are complaining about when they talk about needing to get new gear is that when you level sync equipment, the value of ALL materia slotted in that gear is reduced to zero. So, for a ilvl 435 capped fight, sure you can wear your ilvl 500 savage gear, but ilvl 430 gear will be BETTER, because you can actually make use of the stats from the materia you slot into it.

I don't know if this fight is going to be tuned hard enough that overmelded 430 crafted gear will be necessary to clear it, but it's always irritating to have to carry around a full second set of gear to be optimal for a given fight.

It's still a mystery to me why the devs didn't build the level sync system to sync materia along with the other stats on the gear. It would have saved folks an awful lot of trouble. As it is, folks progging Ultimate fights typically have to farm up a full set of the appropriate Savage gear first, which is a major annoyance (both the farming, and also having to manage the extra set of gear with limited inventory).
