Thread: I've skipped every cutscene since ARR 2.5.

No, it's not because I hate watching cutscenes. It's not because I hate the story. I just have a short attention span and feel like I have so much to do in-game that long cutscenes get in the way of that. I just like having the freedom to get in as much gameplay as I want, and if that means even having to watch a YouTube video to watch a cutscene that I couldn't watch - not that I even have the desire to - I will do that.

We need to do away with this idea that players only play FFXIV for the story or that FFXIV's main selling point is its story. I've been a long-time FF franchise fan since FFVII. I've played every main FF and have bawled my eyes out at almost every single storyline. But in an MMO, I don't see story as a main focal point. I play MMOs because I like the idea of challenging, rewarding gameplay in a massive multiplayer setting, and being stuck behind a wall of cutscenes gets in the way of that.

Yes, I am one of those players who skips cutscenes on patch day and immediately queues into a duty. Yet I find that I instantly get into these new, shiny trials and raids even in new content because I know there are people like me, anxious to try new fight content. Is that so bad?

It's not bad, not everyone enjoys the same things and there's no need for you to sit through something you aren't getting a modicum of satisfaction out of.

However as Krotoan stated, your ability and freedom to do such a thing and finding a desire to engage in content foremost isn't going to change the fact that the story is a major drawing point for this game. Nor that there are a lot of people out there who absolutely hate the content this game provides outside of it's most casual dungeon romps, but wait with baited breath for each new installment of the narrative. I think what makes FF14 a pretty decent game overall is it's ability to mostly toe that line between the two. It could absolutely do a little better on the content side of the equation there is no arguing that point, you've all heard me whine about the state some of the jobs are in at this point plenty of times, but it is nice that the game can mostly cater to both sides of the equation without alienating one or the other too badly.

Long story short, play how you want to play and ignore the people who tell you how you 'should' be enjoying the game. But also know that the game is very unlikely to change it's approach to story and content anytime soon.

I mean, it's a shame that content isn't for you, but you're still having fun.
And if the main point of 14 was the story then after beating MSQ people would just unsub, but numbers are still high (I'm still regularly hitting login cues regardless of when I log in) even when everyone is bored with post game content in the middle of an unusually long patch cycle.

Never heard of people saying players in general only play for the story. I have seen people say they personally do, but not say most people do. Sure often people say most enjoy the story but that's not the same thing. Whatever you enjoy doesn't have to be your favourite thing.

No don't do away with the idea that its story is a strong selling point...because it is. But it's not its only selling point. It's not a book or film. It's a game with mechanics. Some people only enjoy certain features and that's fine.

OP if you enjoy the game without paying attention to the story, good for you. You do you. The story is not a requirement to play well or enjoy the game. Nothing wrong with your approach to FFXIV.
