Audio suddenly going mute and absurd FPS drop afterwards

I'm having this issue where my audio fails for a brief second and then the game goes completely mute. Other applications such as Discord also go mute but in that specific case it is fixed by simply disconnecting from the voice channel and connecting back again or by unplugging my headset usb cable and plugging it back in. Final Fantasy however remains muted until I shut it down and start it up again.

After that there is a gradual FPS drop that makes the game unplayable very quickly, the only way to fix that is to close the game and start it again.

I'm currently doing Ucob prog so it has only happened inside that specific duty so far, I'm not sure if it's related or not.

This has been extremely annoying because it's forcing my group to wait a few minutes doing nothing since I need to restart the game, going through the launcher, one-time code, loading screens, queue, more loading and then getting back to the fight.

Anyone have any clues as to what is causing this?

To me at first this did sound like a driver needed to be updated if discord was going mute to. But if fixing it is unplugging and re-plugging in your headset it may not be (would still check your graphics drivers, if your nvida they do muck with sound even if you tell it not to)

I already updated my sound driver and I disabled any Nvidia sound related things, I thought it was a sound driver conflict but seems it isn't. Another thing is that the same issue doesn't occur when I'm playing other games.

No I def understand. Its when you had at first about discord being weird but it kept going even after discord evened out. If it was a driver discord would still be going crazy. Im gonna bet something on their end that hopefully will get fixed in the next patch cycle. fyi if they tell you do a clean boot... DONT!!! I spent 5h trying to be able to get back into my PC, had to hard wipe it but lucky enough I didnt lose everything for most was on the 2nd HD but I still lost work work for it was still on the main drive.

Good morning, thank you for posting in the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

When the audio cuts out, is there an external audio device plugged in such as headphones or speakers? Additionally could you provide a system report?
Simply go to the 'Config' option on the Final Fantasy XIV launcher and to the right of 'System Information' click on 'Display.'

Hello, thanks for answering. When the audio cuts out, I have my Logitech G633 headphones plugged in. I don't have speakers so the headphones are my only source of audio.

Good afternoon and thank you for the reply.

Does the same issue occur if there are no external audio devices plugged in?

I don't know. If I were to unplug my headphones then I would have no audio at all and I can't do Ucob like that. Since this issue has only been occurring to me while I'm inside the Ucob duty, that ends up pretty impractical to test out.

I still can't say for sure if it's related to that specific duty or not but so far I haven't experienced it while doing Savage Eden's Verse for a few hours or Trials. However it always happens when I'm doing Ucob at least once per raid time (which is around 3 hours), in fact yesterday it happened twice. I couldn't detect any specific moment of the fight or skill used that could be linked to triggering the issue too, however if memory serves me right it both times happened during the Twintania phase yesterday. I will try to pay more attention today and see if there are any similarities as to the timing of the issue.

Another day of raiding but this time the issue didn't occur, thankfully. That doesn't mean the issue is gone though.

Gonna do it again tonight and report back on anything that happens. Looking around the forum for similar issues pointed me to threads where people say the game can't recover after a sound driver hiccup and this kind of thing happens, none of the threads had a way to fix it. Meanwhile if anyone knows what is going on and how to solve it please leave a reply.

Update: Happened again last night, during around 30% of Twintania's HP.

Update 2: Again, this time on Nael. I spent 5 hours doing Savage fights and this issue didn't occur during them, so I guess it must be related to the Ucob duty. I'll probably stop updating this post btw, will keep checking to see if there are any solutions though.

Good afternoon and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

Have any changes happened to the device before the issue began? We would also like to recommend several other troubleshooting steps:

    1) Make sure that your hardware is not overheating and remove any overclocks you may have on your graphics card or processor. Please check that any fans or vents are clear of blocks.
    2) Disable any additional programs that could cause interference with the game itself including chat programs. Also, remove any custom configurations made using graphics driver-level programs
    3) Remove any mods or injectors from the game or system
    4) Update and reinstall the drivers for your graphics and sound cards
    5) Perform a clean boot by opening the task manager and select the 'Start up' Tab. Disable everything
