You should revise your statement that if you wanted anything, you had to actually turn in hundreds if not thousands of millioncorn/cabbage/vegetables at Selbina because it was the quickest and most efficient way to gain fame.
Non repeatable quests gave more fame than repeateable ones. If you just sat down and enjoyed the game instead of trying to rush to the top the requirement unlocked quests would be opened without even noticing.

Then again, if you wanted to rush, then yeah, you could go and grind like crazy and hate the game. Hey man, its up to you. Your choice of gameplay. But don't go complaining if you have a bad time.

When XI was released being a summoner actually meant something. It was a staple job and getting the avatars was no easy task. People would actually stop in jeuno to stare at them in awe.

How horrible, having an objective to aim to instead of being handed everything to you the first week through mindless grinding.
