The more quests you did, the more fame you did. And npcs would start recognizing you and offering you new quests. Having high fame would also lower the prize at NPC salesmen.
You should revise your statement that if you wanted anything, you had to actually turn in hundreds if not thousands of millioncorn/cabbage/vegetables at Selbina because it was the quickest and most efficient way to gain fame.

Fame was more or less a horrible block for people to start experiencing content. Don't have fame? No problem, we'll just exclude you from playing the only job you had a desire to play in the first place! Hurray!

Anyone who doesn't like the fame system is an idiot who doesn't want to actually play the game, just have everything served in a silver platter. They are also the same people who complain they run out of content too fast.
Because nothing says fun like wanting to unlock Summoner as your main job, but having to do some arbitrary garbage fame turn in quest. Accessibility is far more important than FFXI nostalgia or "FFXI challenges."
