Without open world HNM's guess what? Botting doesn't matter a whole lot. When you start adding claims and special things in which botting *really* shines, it becomes a widespread problem. Remove incentives to bot
You need to remove these things from FFXIV then:

    -Leveling
    -Crafting
    -Ability to make gil
    -Ability to spend gil
    -Questing
    -Monsters
    -Don't incorporate PvP
-Targetable triggers (i.e if there's an event that requires x amount of people to touch to get a special gift, i.e treasure hunt, this is botted as well)

Face it, HNMs don't create botting, MMORPGs in general creates botting,

HNM create content for bot only, i'm sorry, but you can't really compet with a bot, only them are available to enjoy the end game content. (well, not all HNM, but the most interesting and have long pop timer).

I'd prefer if it would have a spawn condition like Dodore, or something random as opposed to exact spawn time to give more of a fair chance to everyone. Also, random spawn location within a biiiiig zone for same reason.

People need to stop assuming everyone who did HNM in XI botted, I played on ps2 and claimed enough niddhogs to say fuck a bot program. People are just quick to point the blame finger when they don't get it. I mean when the first land HNM's came out in this game and my ls claimed it 5 times in a row we had ppl calling us bots then. Folks are gonna use this as an excuse to try to make a point. You can't tell the devs not to put in content cause your afraid of hackers.

If you don't wanna be bothered with hackers stay inside your safe little instance.

I would probably much prefer a pop NM than an open world NM that can be claimed, there is nothing fun about losing a claim you have been camping for hours.

Who knows, but Nidhogg was featured heavily in the DRG storyline, I would love to see a HNM flan/pudding personally.
agree with all points but would be nice time sink

I agree that in most cases like in FFXI you still had a chance to outclaim bots, due to lag, ISP connection, and system specs that can handle the absurd load of people. I myself had claimed a few here and there, but it didn't mean they didn't exist or weren't in abundance. Back on Asura we had a guy we called "Super Ralph" and for the longest time he had a 98% claim rate on all HNM's he ever attended. He was just a naked level 75 crafting mule and all he ever did was run to the zone, get claim, move on to the next zone while his shell killed the HNMs, and repeat. In the end it turned most HNMLS's off from doing it or forced them to feel the need to bot in order to compete, by time the guy got banned all kinds of shells began botting to compete with each other just compounding the problem, just turned into an endless cycle.

I'm all for a little competition, but I really would rather avoid reliving 21-24 hour windows that just encourages foul play from players.

You should look at my thread labeled "Highly Notorious Monsters", it has a bunch of great points concerning HNM/NM's.

But the above posters hit the point head-on... Anything and everything in MMORPG's runs a risk of being exploited/botted. Omitting content solely due to the fact that it may possibly be exploited is sheer nonsense. Anything of that sort can eventually be patched/fixed, and can work its way into the game in a fair, even manner.

I understand each and everyone's concerns about the matter. I myself don't want a system that includes bot's fighting for claim. I'm sure however, that regardless of what obstacles may come into the path, an NM/HNM system can work its way into FFXIV.

unfortunately thats not how the higher NMs work

    For instance....

Buffalo spawns during the day only(so its up half the time) and it has a few minute respawn
    The goblin is same way
The peiste is up during the night

Dodore is the exception to all this, he spawns during foggy weather, weather changes every 8 IN GAME hours. so its a random chance for it coming up
but while its that weather he has a quick respawn still

I never said it is not impossible to claim against a bot, and you'd had more luck doing it after an update where every program were broken.

I say it is impossible to really compet against a botter, not that i'm saying everyone is botting, i dont want to spend 100 Times camping the NM where i'm sure i wont get 90 of them that leave me a small percent chance to get it.

There is others way to make HNM content enjoyable, you could simply make Nidhogg flying in the air, until someone use a pop item to make her/him fall instead of just make it pop on a time window.

I played on ps2 and claimed enough niddhogs to say fuck a bot program.
Did you really claimed it ? are you 100% sure ? or isn't your alliance that claim it, maybe someone that wont say he was using a bot. (Saying "my friend or my linkshell member will never bot" wont work).

That's my point, a bot encourage a discouraged ppl to bot or give up. i'm all open for competition, and outdoor HNM, but Square Enix have to find another way to make them that just a normal pop condition.
