Why is AFKing so popular in FFXIV?

I was in a fc that had people talking about going afk during the day to "farm ingame time" never knew thats a thing. just so they can show off how much ingame time they have.

They don’t want to know how long they actually play.

i just tend to afk while people watching, it also lets my character be visible for anyone who might be interested in rping with me. i don't leave my pc running the game while i sleep or go to work though, but if im home and just doing other things i might leave the game running

Not really sure why people afk so long. I'm usually alt tabbed while waiting for a queue to pop, but that's like 20 to 30 minutes. I've seen the same roegadyn afk dancing in the same spot at the golden saucer for about two months now. Not sure why you would spend money on a sub just to afk nonstop but I guess that's their prerogative.

I've wondered this too but I'd like to see an answer from popular AFK'ers like the Balmung Moogles or Dancing Thancred from Brynhilder.

Personally I think it's cool, gives the game more personality.

Waiting for a queue to pop or a PF to fill while doing something else. Another option is to keep sending my retainers each hour.

Mostly it was me just having to do stuff around the house or just forgetting I was logged in or being tabbed out (PC) while waiting for a queue. Then, I had an injury where I couldn't really play for a while but I missed being in the game, so I'd just log in and lie down listening to the music, nap, etc.

If I get the AFK symbol it's because I set my timer to say AFK when I just chilling in DPS queue every 5 minutes.

You can turn off in the settings I believe that you don't want the AFK so there's that.

I only AFK to eat, or play a quick game of Smash IRL and the Nintendo game. Other times are doze off to sleep. From what I seen, it’s just random people with random irl obstacles...and a few raiders bored to death fully cloaked in Edenchoir gear and nothing to fight with it
