Why is AFKing so popular in FFXIV?

If I know I'm definitely going to play later I may go afk for several hours, or occasionally I fall asleep waiting for something. In FFXI leaving your character logged in with your bazaar items for sale was standard practice and although there's no real reason to be afk for extended periods here, to me it's normal. If I'm at my house I'm often doing the Gold Dance but other places I tend to just sit on a bench.

There may be an element of showing off, personally I think for me it's more fantasy/rpg related though. I know my character isn't really doing anything while I'm gone but at the risk of sounding silly, I like the idea that she's there, dancing or sitting in front of the fire.

The game is just that good!??!? Some people have all BIS gear with sweet glamours and they just want to show off. When an MMO is good this is what people do.

I AFK to smoke pot and get blitzed lol. Then I literally "people watch" in Thanalan or something, and I sometimes get high and travel to Balmung for shits and giggles.

I read some rp here and there when bored, but too shy to actually interact with people.

At other times, people are using Discord while roleplaying other than doing it in game as well.

I'm consistently on Discord for social events and happenings going on in the game world of Eorzea.

Ya know, you made me think of another reason.

We have search information, and if you afk on an RP centric world, chances are people will reach out to you for RP. I personally promote my houses for public use via my search info and people check it out while I'm alt+tabbed. If anything, I would find that alone to be XIV specific.

I just dont bother logging out alot of the time when I go to do other things around the home.

FFXI actually measured my playtime in years because of this lol

Why log out? It's second life Plus I got a house and an apt I never log out. when I sleep I put my character to sleep in her bed. They let you do it so why not?

I often afk but have notification sound enabled. I can hear i when someone sends me a message

I AFK, because I'm not going to be gone for long. I'm just sleeping for about 6-8hrs and work a 12hr job afterwards, so I don't think that's long enough for me the log off.

I generally like to AFK around, put Ifalna in some pretty spot, activate GPose and choose a nice camera angle.
Sort of using her as an animated wallpaper while listening to music or browsing the web.

Meanwhile I keep an eye on the chat and talk to folks.

Though I do tend to log off when I am really focused on sth else.

Why is logging off so popular? You have to log in anyway if you want to play. Easier and faster if you just stay logged in. :P
