It could just as easily be added as a rifle using job that shoots healing shells/bullets at allies and explosive/poison based shells/bullets at enemies. We already have a gun based job, of course, but that means little when there's multiple sword based jobs. I'd love for Chemist to originate from Garlemald, personally.
The Flintlock from FFTA2 used cannons, and their skills were geared towards healing and support. The Cannoneer from the same game was more offensive but had the skills potion shell and ether shell. They could base the chemist off these while adding damaging skills like poison shell and the like.
