You should never need to use R1 to switch between hotbars in combat. The expanded hotbar options should give you more than enough space for all your abilities.

I use the expanded hold controls hotbar (the R2+L2 one), but not the double tap bar because the double tapping is too inconsistent for me unfortunately. So I need to press R1 to change to the next hotbar set for things like Limit Break, food, Chocobo commands, or place/heel my pet. I've read that there are other people who also can't use the double tap bar.
Fortunately, I didn't have the problem of holding R1 too long yet, but I understand how it could be a problem.
Piggy backing on this, I use my double-tap L2 for actions I want available on every job. But because these are more universal actions, that's 8 hotbar spaces I can't use for job-specific actions, meaning that for every job, I use the R2 extended hotbar, but still need to swap to another hotbar occasionally. I can't place all my skills for ninja or summoner especially on just one hotbar.
I would use the double tap bar for things like LB or mount too, but then I couldn't have the actions on my R2+L2 bar not visible anymore. The double tap is too unreliable in battle, but for other stuff it's perfectly fine. Problem is that the other bar can't be made visible above the normal cross hotbar. So I have both set to the same one, that's why I need to switch with R1 occasionally for LB or place pet.
Ok, I don't quite understand. Maybe it's because I switched my configuration so long ago, that I don't even know that was a thing. I know Tapping R1 let's you change hotbars, but I never heard of it just continuing to cycle through hotbars, if you keep it pressed. If you keep it pressed, it simply highlights hotbars 1-4, and by pressing the corresponding button (triangle, square, cross, circle) you change to the hotbar you want. Do you just happen not to let go of R1 and hit one of the face buttons too fast?It doesn't happen often, but I'll do a quick change with R1 and hold it for a half second too long and it screws up my rotations.
So, can you either change the length of time that it needs to be held to trigger "Change Set" or can you disable it / change the button to be held and keep R1 as the quick toggle button?
I've looked everywhere and can't believe this isn't an option by now. :/ There has to be a workaround!
[EDIT] Moved to User Interface. (Why can't you delete posts???)
On simliar case, is there a way to lock my controller out of the chat? many times i missclick smt or write in a hurry and end up switching my chat tab, after which its super annoying to even get the control back... >_>
