EDIT: Fun about Botanists and bots aside, you need at first proper gear on your gatherer. After that, leveling to 70 is easy and you should find gear either via marketboard / crafterfriends or the NPC-merchant in 5.0 starting city.

Best way to earn gil as a gatherer is checking MB-demands and then selling the stuff that seems the most lucrative to you.
