You have got it backwards. The massive story IS the game - or at least the majority of the game. Skipping all the story and going directly to the endgame would be like watching a movie, but skipping most of the movie and only watching the last 5 minutes of it.

Which people do. Some people only need the last 5 minutes to know if it was a good movie or not.
