Yeah but that kind of really narrows down the scope of experience, doesn't it?

I can enjoy the occasional base race that will naturally occur when there's a point of no return and running or Returning back won't matter. But I can also enjoy long games, or a back-and-forth, or any number of experiences. Base races without defence is not devoid of PvP, but greatly diminishes the PvP aspect of the experience, leaning too hard on how fast you can destroy structures, mammets, and objectives, and is really dampening the breadth of the experience. Base races should occur organically, and not be something people deliberately vie for or agree on, and the designers would have put in this much other content into Rival Wings if they wanted every game to go like that
