Grab some "apprentice's practice materials" from one of the vendors that sell them(300 gil in eulmore crystarium or firmament), then try the practice recipes(artisans durable/fragile practice materials). While you dont get a useful item in the process, only spending 300 gil(and a couple crystals) for a full practice is certainly better then gathering the materials for a real craft and hoping you dont mess up.
I'll check it out, after I get tired of gathering. Suddenly found out there's a huge demand for ordinary lvl 70-80 stuff I can get without timer (wouldn't surprise me if it's more money in gathering than crafting).
