When the OP gets a chance, can you mark your opening post up with SPOILERS!!!.

And re: Avatar, I think I enjoyed Dances with Wolves ("Leave my wolf alone!") and Last Samurai more ("Raz Aghoul: 'He died a gude death'").

Re: epic storylines. I don't really see how the MMO FF games can have a super epic storyline, when our characters usually watch other characters taking the spotlight. Our characters mostly nod, look on in horror, run up to something to look up in horror, and convey our thoughts when the screen is blacked out.

    SPOILERS
DRG's quest: setup to Ishgard and battle with the dragons
WHM's quest: setup to Black Shroud change of appearance (coming calamity)
    BLM's quest: ???
PLD quest: typical struggle of hierarchy and control of power
BRD quest: man becoming confident again
    WAR quest: ???

Have not finished the WAR or BLM quests yet, in fact haven't touched the WAR quests yet. But while they are all good vs. evil is that not the concept for all RPGs?

    Silly thread is silly.

FFXIV =/= 2.0. They are two different games in design, story, and content. Well maybe not content since its being ported over, but for the most part 2.0 is a different beast altogether. All complaints about FFXIV story/design wise are *almost* pointless since 2.0 is essentially a different game. The changes made to FFXIV are mostly for

    1) content, which will be ported over.

    2) Wrapping up the story (which will not be in 2.0 btw)

    3) Just giving us shit to do/try before 2.0

In other words you need to think of the games as entirely different and entirely separate. A criticism of FFXIV is *not* a criticism of 2.0, and vice versa. This is a long way of saying it is a waste of time/energy to criticize FFXIV *unless* you are talking specifically about content that is being ported over (jobs/classes/dungeons/gear/etc). Story content is not being ported over, so the complaint is more or less moot. They're scrapping the current story and adding a new storyline in 2.0.

This was the case in the main scenario (which sucks), but the job quests have your character actively taking a role in things. The last couple of Paladin quests and the last Dragoon quest are good examples. The Monk line is similar. The main scenario sucks because your character doesn't do anything and they had to accommodate crafter/gatherers.

As far as all of the quests having the corrupted by power theme I'd disagree. The paladin quest, at least, is about a man who thinks he's been betrayed by one of his heroes. That pain blinds him to the truth. Rather than being corrupted by his new-found power (position as captain of the sultansworn paladins), he feels inadequate when compared to his predecessor.

I could be wrong about all that though cause it's been a while since I read the quest text. There are certainly some common themes in job quests. Dragoon and Monk both deal with vengeance. Bard and Black Mage are about redemption and guilt. That's not necessarily a bad thing though.

There are certainly some underlying themes in a few of them. Vengeance is there in the dragoon and monk stories

At times I feel like we're paying them to let us beta test 2.0 concepts.... I don't like how that feels, but I'm dumb enough to keep playing.

I don't know what job quests you've completed. If I'm playing version 1.0, maybe you're playing version 0.0.

Thats exactly what you're doing. Idk I kept playing cuz I like to see and experience change as it happens. I thought it'd be cool to see how things changed over time, and be a part of it.

Then use your black materia to summon another meteor to throw into the first meteor so both will break into little meteor pieces and never hit Hydaelyn..?

    Back to topic:
I don't know what you call a good storyline, OP, but at least I think not the underlying theme is important but what you do with it.
There is actually NO topic humans can think of which some sick freak hasn't written a story about.
Final Fantasy is even pretty wellknown for always using the same good vs. evil theme, 4 elements, corrupted by power, still I never found the stories to be boring or recyceld, because the skill isn't to find a topic no one has written about yet but to write a original, interesting story with an underlying theme that is wellknown

The AF stories are exactly this, very different stories with some interesting turns, regardless of some sharing the underlying theme of 'corrupted by power'.
Especially the end of the BLM quest was awesome. I also really liked Jehantel's struggle with himself.
I gathered the verses of Althyk's hymn and they are such a great reflection of how he feels as the story progresses.
Sure, he once got corrupted by power, but that's not what the story is about.
