1. "There is no reason to steal homes from people after 45 days other than to simply be jerks"
Actually, there is. To maintain availability. If there was no auto-demolition then you would never have a chance, yet as it stands right now (Not now, because paused timer, but still!) you have a chance to get it. That is good enough for some people.
2. "now that we are in a pandemic lockdown, they take away the timers"
Yes, they do. Because as you said, life happens. Life takes priority over virtual entertainment, but I'm sure you're of the "well, if they can't pay their sub, then they don't deserve what they have" group, which is.. Wrong. In so many ways. Just because YOU aren't affected by the pandemic to a point of having to cut corners just to keep your house and food on your table, that doesn't mean it's all fine and dandy all around the world. If you had a house, which you fought tooth and nail to obtain, only to go into the hospital. It'd suck pretty badly for you to come back to a "Well, you didn't play." message. Put yourself in their shoes before throwing shade.
3."the time has come that SE should once and for all give the rest of the wards up to 50"
Nope. Purely because it's not as simple as flicking a switch. We already got a ward upgrade a few months ago, yet within a WEEK of having those wards, people refused to read the fine print or try to get their houses and chose instead to continue whining these tired points. It takes a lot more behind the scenes to upgrade Wards, given how much data is being stored in those wards. With how XIVs systems (that we know of, at least) are wired, it can't be that simple. While the interior of all houses are instanced (meaning they only load when a player is in that instance) the wards aren't.
Be patient. You'll get a house eventually and then you'll realize after a week, maybe even a month or two, that you have a house and it just.. Sits there. You would've decorated it to the way you want, use it for roleplay scenarios, maybe even use it as a getaway for crafting, but eventually, it'll just be a thing you have that gathers dust. Something you now have to maintain a sub just to keep, but the mere thought of you losing your house is something plenty of people refuse on principle, even when they don't use it.
Keep in mind, i'm not saying that will happen to everyone, only that it is my personal view. I've had a house for over a year now and I still use it, albeit not as regularly as I used to. I can chalk it up to 'not any content I'm interested in' or 'taking a break' but that isn't enough for some people.
