Well, there will not be a 'FFXIV-2' as you're technically already playing it. FFXIV ARR is a pseudo-sequel as well as a reboot to the original version of FFXIV (version 1.0) that failed. ARR is extremely successful, 1.0 was not. So, there is absolutely no reason for SE to spend a huge amount of time, money and manpower on another sequel to a game that is still doing extremely well, especially in these uncertain times.

And, if FFXI is anything to go by, it also has to be remembered that MMORPGs are a dying industry, which was not the case back in 2005 when FFXIV's development first began - rather than make a sequel to FFXI they decided to make an entirely new FF MMORPG - FFXIV 1.0 was the result. And we all know how that turned out.

In those days, it was all about 'killing WoW', every MMO wanted to knock Blizzard's cash cow of their lofty perch. Times have changed though and worldwide MMOs are losing business with most shutting down or going F2P/P2W. No longer is there any interest to killing WoW as FFXIV ARR has already sort of achieved that (or at least given WoW a black eye and is jostling for space on the perch). MMOs are old hat, and just not worth the outlay to developers and their increasingly hesitant investors, and SE are no different. There simply is little to no chance of SE ever doing another MMORPG again (FF or otherwise), that's just being realistic.

MMORPGs are a genre that's in hibernation. Yes, the "old style" MMORPG is definitely on its way out (thanks in large part to the obsession that high-dollar products had in aping WoW, rather than attempting to create their own, unique thing), but I refuse to believe that the basic premise (and promise) of the MMORPG - that of taking on a persona within a living world - is in anything but in its infancy. Ultimately, people want to play the role of the hero alongside their friends - it is, in many ways, the greatest expression of all adventure-style gaming. That impetus for development is not going to simply go away.
