When they do a sequel, would you want it set in Eorzea again?

I think it's pretty plain that there will eventually be a FFXIV sequel. Square moved on from FFXI when it became too dated, and I don't see them putting the necessary, EVE or WoW-like investments into engine, models, the world, etc. that would be required to keep FFXIV "timeless" (no, I am not bashing the game - I think it still looks very good; I think it still plays nicely. But let's be real here: not much has evolved graphically since re-launch. Plus the gameplay of more modern MMORPGs seems to be increasingly shifting towards very active non-tab-based systems... which FFXIV isn't going to magically become).

Overall, I think this is a good thing. Games (like WoW) get stale - people want to, at some point, have that 'fresh' feel back in an MMORPG that you can only really experience at the start. Plus, FFXIV's repetitive core story reliance on summoning and fighting primals (or what amount to primal stand-ins [like the wardens]) is arguably already a bit of a taxed narrative. A restart isn't required imminently, but I think we can all acknowledge that in the 2024-2027 (or so) window, it might be time for a new game.

So, to the topic: would you want a sequel to be set in Eorzea? Personally - and I can only speak for myself here - I'd prefer it in one of the other 'high fantasy' FF worlds, such as FFVI's World of Ruin (OR it could be a far, far, FAAAAAR prequel to FFVI set in the World of Balance, during the War of the Magi), or in FFT's Ivalice. I also think the world of FFVII would be interesting, but A) the dieselpunk setting might wear on a lot of people, and B) there don't seem to be a lot of non-human races in that world (or much room to add them without jeopardizing FFVII's core story in retrospect).

But, yeah - I think it might be nice for the next game to let Eorzea 'rest' a bit. Where would you set it?

I like that every FF has it's own world and setting.

Well, there will not be a 'FFXIV-2' as you're technically already playing it. FFXIV ARR is a pseudo-sequel as well as a reboot to the original version of FFXIV (version 1.0) that failed. ARR is extremely successful, 1.0 was not. So, there is absolutely no reason for SE to spend a huge amount of time, money and manpower on another sequel to a game that is still doing extremely well, especially in these uncertain times.

And, if FFXI is anything to go by, it also has to be remembered that MMORPGs are a dying industry, which was not the case back in 2005 when FFXIV's development first began - rather than make a sequel to FFXI they decided to make an entirely new FF MMORPG - FFXIV 1.0 was the result. And we all know how that turned out.

In those days, it was all about 'killing WoW', every MMO wanted to knock Blizzard's cash cow of their lofty perch. Times have changed though and worldwide MMOs are losing business with most shutting down or going F2P/P2W. No longer is there any interest to killing WoW as FFXIV ARR has already sort of achieved that (or at least given WoW a black eye and is jostling for space on the perch). MMOs are old hat, and just not worth the outlay to developers and their increasingly hesitant investors, and SE are no different. There simply is little to no chance of SE ever doing another MMORPG again (FF or otherwise), that's just being realistic.

I'd rather they make a new setting and world. If they really had to use an existing setting... mildly curious in how they'd approach Crystal Chronicles, and the races would be different from XI/XIV's basic five, at least somewhat. But even then that's more of a "I wonder how they'd do it" as opposed to "I want them to do that" which is kind of different. Most FF's don't have an MMO tier world. Like VI? Magic is over. The world is ruined, and huge chunks of things in general are removed that would, to me at least, be necessary for a proper FF style. Ivalice is overdone as it is. As you said other races is neat, and most FF's don't have a ton of them. Off the top of my head I could see IX having some diversity on the race standpoint, but most FFs it's just human and pseudo human races, even more so than XI/XIV.

And all things end. It's inevitable. Trying to insist on constant uptime isn't realistic. So XIV will end. XI has ended. I would say that WoW, even with new content, has basically ended, as have numerous other MMOs.

As Enkidoh said it's very unlikely there will be a sequel MMORPG, and if there is it's unlikely to be like anything we're used to given how the genre itself is constantly cannibalizing itself. Whether we like it or not that's just how the current market trends are going - and if MMORPG's do see a resurgence down the road they likely won't be much like their current iteration. That's not to say the genre is dead per say, but the years of MMORPG's being the 'big thing' for companies to capitalize on are long gone for now.

With that said however I can absolutely see FFXIV receiving homages in future FF titles. But that's pretty much it unless SE decides it really wants to dip into spin off titles or secondary media like comics and books.

MMORPGs are a genre that's in hibernation. Yes, the "old style" MMORPG is definitely on its way out (thanks in large part to the obsession that high-dollar products had in aping WoW, rather than attempting to create their own, unique thing), but I refuse to believe that the basic premise (and promise) of the MMORPG - that of taking on a persona within a living world - is in anything but in its infancy. Ultimately, people want to play the role of the hero alongside their friends - it is, in many ways, the greatest expression of all adventure-style gaming. That impetus for development is not going to simply go away.

If we get another FF MMORPG I don't think it will be FFXIV-2 but I do expect them to take things from FFXIV and give them a new spin on it, like FFXIV did with FFXI.

Though it could be possible to have it set in same universe what with Meracydia and the New world continents but i'd rather those get explored in FFXIV and not a 'sequel' personally.

Wasn't it said at some point that the Ascian/Garlean plot is considered "season one" of XIV? I might be misremembering, but I thought I read that somewhere. Of course, plans change and all....

I wouldn't object to seeing more of the world after that, but considering the constant issues they run into with the game's systems as it is, it really needs a total overhaul if it's gonna keep going for too much longer.

I hope the next FF MMORPG could be in a new world setting and perhaps SE could still allow us to port our FFXIV character over.

It would be like a continual adventure for my character, if they ever decide on a new FF MMORPG.

It is not the MMO-genre. WoW killers always fail because they are all copy-past from each others... We don't need a n-medieval copy of TESO or BDO. But they all do ArcheAge-likes... no surprising they don't succeed. But they don't want to understand...

If SE do a FFXVI or FFXVII, I wish a brand fantasy new world, brand new story. Technically, BDO-like gameplay but with full free keybinding would be nice.
