However I am not opposed to a method that allows you to search and try on any piece of gear without having to find it first or examine it on another player
To build upon this idea, it would be an incredible addition to the game to add a function that allows you to search for ALL gear in the game, be it weapons, accessories, armour, etc. I share the desire to be able to try on gear from the mogstation so I can see how it looks on my character (and to decide if it's really worth spending upwards of $30 CAD... lol) but I also wish to be able to view dungeon gear before I spend hours and hours farming it out. Dungeon farming can be enjoyable and quick at best and soul-crushingly long at worst, so being able to try on the gear you're trying to farm and decide whether you want to put potential hours into getting specific loot would be a very welcome addition to the game.

Not really. All they need to do is make a wardrobe that allows you to preview every outfit in the game. Think of it like the Aesthetician or Character Customization screen. You'd put on the Eastern Lady Togi outfit the same way you'd put on a new hair style.

Maybe in universe it could be some snobby rich person going "look at these amazing things I have that you can't peasant."

I THINK that would work for this without requiring too much extra work.
I was going to suggest the same thing.

I definitely wouldn't mind being able to specifically preview pieces on my actual character. There are some pieces I am a bit iffy about, it would for sure make some glamour easier to make without dropping 18 dollars or whatever most of the time just to see.

GW2 has a really useful wardrobe option - all skins available in game are listed in one tab and sorted by the type of armor, this kind of a feature would be pretty great here as well, especially considering the amount of sources you can get armor from.

All the attire models are in the game client, so all you need is the code to display them on your character.
WoW has by default the option to view any available gear item, and try on (only one at a time) in a small window.
They also have an addon called Mogit which can access the client models and let you build up and view a full outfit using every piece of gear in the game, save it, and use it as sort of a shopping list.. In FFXIV, I have no idea what anything looks like on my character, so I don't do glamours.

They could probably just load them onto the market board and just make them untradeable. I've previewed plenty of items that have a market listing but none being sold yet, might as well make that a useful feature.

Could also apply that to dungeon gear and other untradable items
