Hyur on your left in the second picture looks fine. Their hair and cloak matches their face strangely enough. They have a lot of personality. I think they make your character look neat by not just being the same face as yours with different hair.I'm quite content with face 1 honestly, so long as the other options are appropriately set it looks just fine. Here's some random screenshots (assuming they work).
I don't see anything wrong with it. Can't say the same for the Hyur to my left in the second picture though.
I think face 1 is the best. I try so hard to like face 5, and I know it's really popular, but it looks so plastic and mannequin like to me.
Face 5 needs to be refurbished. It's very cute but the eyes are somewhat uncanny.
Also the walking animations.. it's grotesque.
This is my midlander... I think she's super pretty, I'd love to go back to her again but they need to expand the glamour dresser because I only have space for boy clothes. I even love the anime run animation!
Face 5 is very bad. It has terrible textures and 1000-yard stare eyes. I do not know why it is popular.
I think the rest of the Midlander faces are very nice though!
The eyes on face 5 are the clearest and widest option available on midlander, with the thickest eyelashes. It is very important in a video game for eyes to stand out, for expression readability at a distance. People may be choosing based mainly on this, whether they realize it or not. Face 5 also has the most conventionally beautiful composition, with a smooth heart shape, and a youthful appearance. The eyebrows more noticeably take colour with hair colour changes, enabling me to make a blonde character. I cannot do this with face 1, the only other choice I'd consider.
Face 5's best nose is a nice upturned thing, but this is where we get into the negatives, because even this best nose is far too small and looks horrible at some angles. If it just had a few more ticks of depth and width, it would be perfect.
Face 5 is also very poorly animated, and as you said, has awful textures (especially the fullest lip option). These problems make it seem comparatively lifeless. In fact, I've just discovered there is virtually no difference between the neutral expression and the "serious business" frown WOL often does in cutscenes.
I would have gone with face 1, but there is just something odd about the shape. It's long, and the chin doesn't smoothly taper. The nose bridge is strangely wide, creating the illusion of a huge distance between the eyes. (5 has this problem too, but to a lesser degree due to the aforementioned very wide eyes.) The mouth is strangely set. I enjoy other people's characters with face 1, but not my attempts.
I was able to create the pretty blonde* I wanted to with face 5. Just didn't anticipate the features' wooden immobility. I still think 5 is the most aesthetic face, but it needs a serious update.
*Hair is brown at time of posting because I am doing a cosplay~
You won't see much from these awful Lodestone images, I'm afraid, especially with my toon's fringe (as of posting) in the way. It might be clearer if you look at character creation. Face 5's eyes can be almost freakishly huge (link) with the widest eye option, which is noticeably larger than the widest eye for face 1 (link).
I've just gone into the character creator and flicked back and forth between faces 1 and 5 for each eye shape setting. The eye sizes and shapes are basically the same except that 5 has more under-eye makeup and dark eyeshadow extending from the outer corner of the eyes.
However, face 5's actual face is smaller so the eyes look proportionately slightly bigger – but also further apart.
Personally I prefer face 1's design. The shape of the eyes looks better to me.
Ask for a stubble, they will give you one next expansion.
