I'm not familiar with [X], so should I write a character who is [X] and would it be taken as representing them badly? Is that better or worse than not at all?

Write the character first, then decide everything else. If you focus soley on how [X] would act then your setting yourself up for "misrepresentation" and all the nasty labels that come with. Plus by focusing on how [X] is supposed to act you're stereotyping which is also bad because you're saying that all of [X] act a certain way. Personality should come before appearance.
