Can you name any popular JP produced media with a popular bearded character then, or were you just doubting with absolutely nothing to back up your words?
Probably a bit of a crappy argument I'll admit, but it's not like the person I was replying to had anything of substance either. Facial hair is preeeeeeetty uncommon. I think Gladio might be the only man in the series with facial hair that's also supposed to be considered nice looking.LOL! I think I remember that now! The people playing "male" vieras with that. Good stuff.
Of course. The whole post is a joke, I was being condescending to the user I replied to. You've gotta look at the bigger picture! User A posts something about Japanese culture, user B questions it*, user A dismisses it, citing anime. Allegedly. (I swear to God mods if you try to get me again for slander) Whole part about Naruto is true though. I watched that thing like a year ago, got to all the filler around the last bit of the show when tensions were high, and haven't got through it. Had a crunchyroll trial. It was just too much. Apparently Bleach is worse.
Mayhaps I made a bit of an assumption in thinking that was common knowledge, but "eh I don't think so" isn't an argument.

Nice looking is subjective. Many people would say Cloud is attractive, while my eyes are entirely on Barret. Even here in the west I don't think beards were that popular either until like the hipster trend in the early 2010's
It depends on what people are referring to in regards to facial hair, since light and thick stubble is a lot more popular in general as an aesthetic compared to thick, scruffy beards. The former tends to enhance the facial features of a guy. The latter tends to be about obscuring a weak jawline. There's countless characters in JRPG's with stubble, though beards aren't exactly a rarity - especially in Japanese games designed to appeal to a more mature audience and/or a Western audience.
Oh yeah, when it comes to games the fully bearded characters tend to have really weak jawlines. All you gotta do is take the beard off a Skyrim Nord preset. It's kind of scary. I tend to prefer stubble as well, it looks a lot nicer. Makes a male character look way cooler. It depends on what people are referring to in regards to facial hair, since light and thick stubble is a lot more popular in general as an aesthetic compared to thick, scruffy beards. Face 4 has a beard. /bye
Face 4 need a better forehead.
I don’t watch anime, but I have seen Old Asian action films and noticed that the main good guys are always hairless from the face, while the villain will have a mustache, beard or goatee. Once I spot facial hair on a character, they’re either the bad guy or the mentor, but the hero is hairless on the face.
One thing I know is that Asians in general struggle with growing facial, so most just stay clean shaven or don’t shave at all, because no hair grows on their face. This might be the reason.
Face 4 doesn't have a beard. If you're looking at the OP's display pic, that's headgear with a chin protector on it.
Looking through the customisation options...
Face 1:
- beard on chin
- big scar over right eye
- 3 x small scars on cheeks
Face 2 (old):
- thick eyebrows
- sideburns
- beard on chin
- big scar over right eye
- small scar on left cheek
Face 3 (youngest):
- thick eyebrows
- small scar over right eye
- 3 x small scars elsewhere
Face 4:
- thicker eyebrows
- black eyeliner
- 2 x diagonal scars across nose/forehead, can make X
- small scar on chin
* Keepers of the Moon swap out one scar option for a forehead gem
So yeah. Face 4 doesn't get a beard at all. (Face 3 also feels badly lacking customisation if you don't want to give your character scars - but also lacking anything impressive-looking if you did want them.)
