A question about the terrible sound this game calls music

You probably didn't get my meaning with the post. I don't blame the developers, or the players, I was wondering if it actually wasn't possible to play real music in the game.

Yes, and judging from your first post, you've heard one person (or group of people) banging on the piano keys and asked if it actually wasn't possible to play real music on that piano.

It's an instrument. You don't have to pass a music test before the game lets you play it in public. Why would you assume that there's some kind of anti-music control on it rather than that the individual performer is playing it badly?

Of course it is not illegal, but it was a silly question.
Naturally it is perfectly possible to play actual music using the performance system, but just like in real life most people do not have the skill to produce more than random notes.

Calling it "the terrible sound this game calls music" is an assumption in itself - that the game designers somehow endorse this as the expected quality of music.

And again, why would you ask if there's some kind of anti-music control on the basis of one person's bad playing, instead of assuming it's a bad player?

:facepalm at OP: Someone didn't take the time to read somewhere how Performance works, hm? :')

To be honest, I was pretty sure it's common knowledge meanwhile, that Bards can play virtual instruments via keyboard like one would play an - let's say - electronic piano, but seemingly that impression was wrong.

But hearing about the poor example you witnessed ingame:
Do yourself a favour and google "Final Fantasy XIV The Moogle Troupe". I suppose the band is a good / positive example for a proper ingame-concert.

There's a wandering troupe of Moogle-clad performers that *I think* performs monthly in Ul'dah on Crystal. They perform renditions of both in game music and modern music: their rendition of Heart's "Magic Man" was closely followed by the theme of the Tempest. Really cool stuff. If you have a character on Crystal, look em up and give them some support.

((EDIT: They're called the Moogle Troupe, and they're located on all the orher data centers too! Definitely give them a look!))

To answer your...well, "question" would imply a good faith inquiry, but anyways, your post, I'm glad your not the sole arbiter of what is deemed "music". The game's perform function utilizes midi-style sound samples that one can use to create a melody. Synchronize with party members and you get a song. You can really get a good song going, too. So nuts to you and your "no fun allowed" mentality, and you should feel bad for attempting to shame people just having fun with Perform. If it really rustles your jimmies that much, just mute it.

Giving doubt, but I'm assuming OP meant there aren't any chords for a person to play on solo - which in normal instruments, you can do. I'm not sure if that's just an inherent design choice but it would make sense if this is what OP meant because a lot of melodies that could be played are limited due to being only able to press one note at a time compared to a musical score which may have chords playing in addition to the melody itself.
