A question about the terrible sound this game calls music

I'm just watching a quartet performing (I say watching, because I prefer not hearing what the play) and am wondering, are they just bad at it, or doesn't this game let the players play real melodies (that they can decide themselves)? I would so have loved to listen to a real concert, real in the sense that real music was played, not just sounds.

I'm confused. Anyone with a bard can pull out an instrument and "play". The instruments are actually played manually. It isn't uncommon for multiple players to just press random notes in cities. But there are also people that play proper melodies.

Not sure if intentionally misleading topic title.

There's more then enough variance in instruments and pitch shifting to piece together a good song.

Some people just aren't as good at it as others.

Going to give you the benefit of the doubt here.
Players are essentially given a small piano to play. Some people are like a cat walking across the keyboard while others are talented pianists. So you can make both a cacophony or music depending on how talented and willing you are.

Music is just sounds in an order, if you can make sounds, you can make music. The quality of the music is subject to the one playing it.

How can you even play as a quartet in this game? Latency won't allow you to sync with other player's music as far as I'm aware.
