Newer Player With Housing Question

Greetings all. First of all, I want to apologize if this should be in another forum. I considered putting it in the New Player forum, but wanted to talk directly to fellow dwellers on Leviathan.

My family and I recently joined the game and are really enjoying it so far. I'm a long-time Final Fantasy fan who played the original Final Fantasy back when it first released to NA. My wife and I played Everquest and several other MMO's for decades now. The community here reminds us of the one we had in the old Everquest days. People are mostly polite, helpful and fun. So, a big thanks for that!

Now the question: One of the big draws for us, aside from it just being Final Fantasy, is the housing and ability to customize it. We are slowly approaching that level, but I've been seeing a lot of discussions on other forums about there being all but a housing shortage. I was hoping someone could fill me in on exactly what the housing situation is on Leviathan.

We formed a small six person FC, and though it is already of rank to get FC Estate, we have not looked into it as we are still learning the game. We do hope to someday do so, but I'm a bit concerned that there is nothing really available.

Any thoughts or advice for us on the housing front in Leviathan? I'm hoping it is not as bad as it sounds because we were really looking forward to that part of the game later.

Hey Khelendrose! Welcome to the game to you and your family. Glad to hear you've been enjoying it.

Leviathan is one of the more populated NA servers, which can make getting a plot difficult for sure. That being said, it's not impossible! If you're able to commit to checking the ward listings frequently and then really camping the placard of a vacated plot, you'll get one eventually. However, due to the pandemic, the automatic demolition for inactive house owners has been suspended until further notice, so plots are only being vacated when someone manually relinquishes them. On top of that, with so many people home right now, any plots that do open up are probably going to see a lot more competition. But if you're planning on waiting until you're more acquainted with the game to tackle housing, auto-demolition might be back on by then which will mean a more steady flow of plots opening up. In the meantime, apartments are both plentiful and cheaper and could give you a small fix until you can get a plot of your own!

My biggest piece of advice is to go for literally any plot that's available to start and then keep your eye out for your dream plot, should you have a specific size, district, or location in mind! It's more expensive, but it's ultimately worth the gil. The system heavily favors existing owners (newly relinquished plots are set with an invisible, random timer—players who don't own a house can't purchase the land until the timer expires, but someone who already owns a plot can instantly relocate there while the timer is still active), so once you get your foot in the door, so to speak, the hardest part is over. (Alternatively, those patches where they add new housing wards are a good way to nab a house, but we got our newest set in 5.1, so they might not be adding more for a while yet.)
