Retainer "Assign retainer a job" list is borked

May 9, 2020 , tried a few times, reproducible.

On an alt, I bought a copy of Modern Vocation and was ready to convert my base-class lvl31 ACN into one of the advanced jobs.

Why the list is borked:

DRK locked (grayed out in pic above)
GNB locked
SCH
AST locked
SAM retainer isn't lvl50
MCH locked
DNC locked
SMN
RDM retainer isn't lvl50

Most importantly, where is WHM? White Mage was my planned assignment.

In summary, this list is missing WHM , PLD , NIN, and erroneously listing locked (for me) jobs.

P.S. This character didn't unlock Heavensward yet, so it's a mystery why some jobs are appearing in this list at all, in addition to being grayed-out in the left image from Classes/Jobs panel in-game.

A retainer can't change from a class to just any job, just as you can't change to just any job from a single class.

An Arcanist can change to a Summoner or Scholar. For all the jobs that are based on classes, the retainer must have the right class to change to that job.
The new jobs added with the expansions do not have a base class, so the rules for switching to those are different.

If you want the retainer to become a White Mage, the retainer must start as a Conjurer.

I posted this a couple days ago in another retainer job thread, so this is a copy-paste. Your list is showing you all of the potential options your retainer can possibly change to given the class you gave them.

• When you hire a retainer (or reset it back to level 1) you first must choose a class: Gladiator, Marauder, Pugilist, Lancer, Archer, Conjurer, Thaumaturge, Arcanist, or Rogue.
• You can choose a job for your retainer with the following restrictions:
  1. All of the classes can change to their associated ARR job once they have reached level 30. E.g. Gladiator can become a Paladin, Marauder can become a Warrior, Archer can become a Bard, etc. You must also have the job at level 50 on your own character to be able to choose this for your retainer.
  2. All of the classes can change to any of the Heavensward, Stormblood or Shadowbringers jobs once they have reached the required level: 50 for HW and SB jobs (DRK, AST, MCH, RDM, SAM) and 60 for ShB jobs (DNC, GNB.) You must also have the job unlocked and meet the same level requirement with your own character to be able to choose this for your retainer.
  3. Classes cannot become ARR jobs that are not associated with their class. E.g. Archer retainers cannot become Paladins, Warriors, Monks, Black Mages, Scholars, etc.
• Once a job is selected it is locked in. You cannot change from one job directly to another job or even change back to a class. This is of special importance if you want one of the HW, SB or ShB jobs because you will need to keep the retainer as a class until they reach the necessary level. I.e. Switching to the ARR job when it becomes available will lock you out of the HW, SB and ShB jobs.
• You can reset a retainer to erase all of their progress and start over. E.g. if you want to change from Machinist to Gunbreaker, or from Arcanist to Bard then you would have to reset your retainer and choose a class option that would allow choosing the desired job. Choosing the Archer class would work for both of these examples.

oh, f, ty Mhaeric. I just confirmed what you said in-game with something I overlooked, hidden behind 4 menus

Retainer Vocate -> Inquire about retainer jobs -> Ask about job requirements. Then you get "Select a class" and choose from one of the base classes. For Arcanist, the same image as #3 is produced.

I got thrown by all the options, guess this is not a bug All the locked stuff being shown feels off still -- makes you want to select it only to be told "You can't" and then redo the menu selections.
Would be nicer if the game just said, "Your base job can become its natural advanced job(s), or any of the Heavensward, Stormblood, or Shadowbringers jobs once the appropriate level requirement is met."

I'll prob just make it a SCH or a SMN, ty.
