We would recommend to have your friend contact us through the SQUARE ENIX Support Center website found here: https://support.na.square-enix.com However, while waiting for a response, we would also recommend ensuring that your friend is utilizing the FINAL FANTASY XIV Free Trial launcher and not the full game launcher.
