    Brand new to FXIV

So, I used to play MMOs a lot back in the day. I played DAoC on Alb/Perc for years! I also played Warhammer online for a long time, as well as City of Heroes.

So, when I googled "best MMORPG to play in 2020" this was the #1 on several lists, and the one I was already looking at, so here I am.

As of right now, I am on Adamantoise, because of the double XP. I am noticing that with the 2x XP I am leveling faster than the main questline (getting synced down when I go into the boss fights). I have only been playing for two days and have been soloing the whole time with no issue. However, what I like about MMOs is the community and interacting with others, which is what I loved about DAoC. In the original DAoC, you didn't make it to level 50 without some good group activities. How does this game foster group interactions?

Is just doing quests as I come to them the best way to level? Right now, I am a 20ish Gladiator (with some minor experimenting in pugilist and theu). I have also been dabbling with the beginning crafting skills.

For your first class the main scenario quest will generally be the best way to level. You will likely end up way overleveled which is normal even without the added 2x exp buff.
Most party content will be dungeons and trials, while the rest of the story is enjoyed solo. For additional classes your best exp comes from dungeons, really.

You'll find more multiplayer aspect out of the endgame grind which entirely consists of such instances.
If you find yourself a good free company is can be very social!

    Welcome!

The most important thing regarding quests is to follow the MSQ. The main story is the key to unlocking prettymuch everything in the game. Most dungeons are unlocked as story events and eventually your route into expansion areas as well. The original game is unfortunately a bit slow-paced (though still good when it gets good) but this improves once you get to the expansions.

You also need to keep up with your guild quests and make sure you do sidequests with a blue marker, because they unlock things.

I'd suggest not picking up other sidequests above the level of the current MSQ quest you're on, as it does lead you from place to place. It's better to take sidequests at the location the story takes you, but not go chasing across the map for extras.

Make sure you also do the Hall of the Novice tutorials as they get you nice gear (visually and stat-wise) and an EXP-boosting ring.

As a side note, don't expect you're into Heavensward once you're past the credits of ARR. There's a long series of Lv50 quests (released as patches over a two year period) before a second round of credits. It's a bit slow but it sets up some important story events along the way. They're working on improving the pacing along with the main game, but still a few months away from implementing it.

Thanks guys. I just unlocked travel between the states and the Golden Saucer. I have been taking my time and trying to learn the ins and outs of the game. I am unlocking each job as I get to it, so that I can dabble and see which playstyle I like the best. I usually do tank or melee DPS classes, so the Gladiator is working well as a starting class, but the rogue has my interest as well. I am definitely interested in the Free Companies, but need to get to know people first. I am not typically a person to hop from one to another. I like to try to ensure that the people and I are a good fit.

Yeah I would suggest joining up with people you like, rather than the first blind invite you get.
Good luck out there my friend!

The first dungeons show up in the story shortly after you have free travel to the main cities, so your good group activities are on their way. The game has a built in match-making system, as well as active encouragements for higher level players to help lower level ones through the story. Also, each dungeon(trial, raid, etc) will have a specific level range - so everyone higher up(including you if youre overleveling the story) will be synced to the correct level to do the instance(keeping at least a little of the challenge). And let me join the others in welcoming you to the game. Have fun!

I just did my first dungeon today. People were kinda surprised to find a genuinely new player, but everyone was very helpful.

    Hello!
I'm actually on Adamantoise myself. As you progress through the MSQ, you will unlock more dungeons.
Keep an eye out for quest markers above peoples heads that blue with a + next to it, as those side quests can sometimes unlock dungeons as well.
If you have any questions during gameplay, feel free to add me, and you are free to message me within the game when i'm on!(ign is Lydell Aria)
