Level all the crafts actually. They are somewhat interdependent.

ALC uses more plants than minerals and even the occasional fish. BTN and MIN both help ALC.

Hello! Welcome to the exciting world of craft/gathering!

You'll learn once you get out of the early stages of crafting that it will rely on crafts from different disciplines in order to advance. While leveling all 8 classes at once is a bit unreasonable, I would definitely pick 2/3 to level at once. For ALC, I would say Leatherworker is a good choice as you will be using leather to craft grimoires.

If you're looking at picking up multiple gatheirng disciplines, I say grab all 3. However, since you're focusing on ALC for now I would say get Fisher, as you will use many fishing items in your recipes. Also pick up Botanist as you will need wood for wands and orchestrion rolls. You can by mats on the marketplace if you absolutely need to, but if you're determined to craft/gather on your own that is your decision.

A couple of tips for leveling classes; use the Ishgard restoration to your advantage once you hit Lvl 10 with a class. It will take up far less of your inventory space and you will slowly gather scrips you can use to purchase fun things! (Unless you decide to level a gathering class, but then you can sell those mats off for money to buy more mats!) You can also use food items to boost your stats.

Speaking of... I mentioned this in another thread, but make sure your crafting gear is up to par with your level. It can be hard to track if you're bursting through levels, but your gear, like any combat class, will have an affect on the stats you need for crafting.

Feel free to ask if you have any more questions!

Unfortunately you can't gather everything you will need. Even if you leveled all three gathering classes, you will eventually need items for recipes that cannot be gathered. They must be bought off the market, or crafted from another crafting class.

If you want to be completely independent you will need to level all classes.

For me, I only have time to do miner and botanist, and then I am doing weaver and leatherworker. I have had to spend a maybe 150K at this point on items I needed to craft quest turn-ins. I make up that in selling other mats I don't need but end up with.
