Skin in the game LW quest

Having trouble with this quest. Level 25 leather workers quest.

Object is to bring a high quality circle of Toad skin to the guild leader. At level I have 180 cp, have leveled up most skills so using Tricks of the trade, inner quite etc. Quality only increased like 2% at each attempt using hasty touch or even standard touch.

With only four attempts and a load of failures, using master mend to buy a few more tries, not even getting close. Ending up at like 9% quality.

I've tried it every way I could think of, only really two guides out there on this, and both are old, both show strong gains with quality that I'm just not seeing.

What am I doing wrong here as I cannot get past this quest.

Are you wearing crafting gear appropriate to your level?

Quality increase is based on your Control stat. If you are wearing very low level gear compared to the crafts you are attempting it will be difficult to succeed.

    Thank you for the reply.

Admittedly, I'm new to the game (migrated from wow, to swtor, to here), and there is soooo much to know. I've been equipping anything with crafting stats when crafting (gathering stats when gathering), but not at all min maxing as I've done for prog raiding. Did not realize control was a vital stat either. I'll max them out as much as I can and try again.

Going to do some reading up on the stat balance and focus on that before I proceed.

    thanks for the help.

    Any other suggestions are welcome.

Hello! Time for a Quick tutorial on Crafting Gear and stats!

(I forgot to snag screenshots so forgive the lack of visual aids)

Any class you play as in FFXIV has stats attached to it that dictate its abilities in the field. The two most important to you as a LTW are Control and Craftsmanship. Craftsmanship dictates how much Progress you make in an action or step, and Control dictates the Quality. There's also your third crafting stat, GP; It doesn't show up in your attributes list, but it is the crafting equivalent of your MP or TP. It determines what actions you can take.

Your stats are based on the tools, clothing, and accessories you wear, and if you have any materia attached. Higher levels mean higher stats, but the specific stats will vary per item. If you need new gear, you can either craft it yourself or buy it in the marketplace. (There is a armorer, tool seller and jewelry seller in the marketplace near the Leatherworker's guild.) Usually if your gear is within 5 levels of your current level you will be okay. But if that craft just isn't working out for you, it may be time to consider upgrading your gear. Once you reach the end-game (Lvl 80 right now) you'll want to max out your specs, but for now just focus on learning and balancing your skills.

You can use Materia to upgrade your items, but you technically haven't learned that yet so I'll save it for the in-game explanation at your next LTW quest.

You can also use food items to temporarily give your stats a boost. And again, these can be bought either through the Marketboard or from a vendor in the marketplace proper.

    Tutorial Concluded!

Thanks for the reply. My gear was actually pretty good, but did upgrade a few items. I found a rather obscure, old post on that quest that stated the only way to complete the quest was to start with HQ mats, so went back and farmed until I got a few four tries and finished.

Thanks for the information, especially in regard to the control stat. Helped.

Oh yeah. Sorry, I've been high-level for so long I forgot that may not be stated in the beginning. *whoops*

Yes, HQ materials will affect the amount of Quality you start with. The more HQ mats you use, the higher percentage you start with. And the percentage per quality action is skewed; it takes forever to get the first 25% of quality but the rest will fly by. Since those HQ mats will help fill up that initial 25% they are a blessing.

I highly recommend picking up either Botanist or Miner (Or both) as these aren't reliant on materials from other classes, but will supply a large number of the materials you need for crafting. I would recommend using Inner Quiet, but it doesn't really hit its potency peak until you learn Byergot's blessing at Lvl 50. It's still handy to use as its boosts your control.

I will. Mats really eat into what little we make at the lower levels, so it really makes good sense to get out there and farm some up. level those skills up.

    Appreciate it.
